"Grandma, what's that?' Jenny asked with a bright smile, her chocolate brown eyes sparkling with interest as she pointed to a thick book resting on the old shelf.
"Oh, just some old fairy tales my dear." The elderly woman said with a gentle smile, pulling the book off the shelf. "All but one of them of course." Her eyes then looked sad and forlorn as her gaze met a picture hanging on the wall across the room.
In that picture stood a younger version of herself, along with a handsome man and beautiful child beside her. The child was Jenny's mother, who went missing and was presumed dead when Jenny was born. And her father? Well her father went missing too. Jenny's lived with her grandma all her life.
"But you told me fairy tales were just stories!" Jenny said with a giggle, eyeing the book with interest.
"Ah, I've never told you about the Calinthro before have I?" The old woman laughed and took a seat in a creaky rocking chair. "Come sit on my lap and I'll tell you all about them."
The young child scrambled up her legs, plopping in her lap as the smile remained plastered on her face. "Cal...Calinthro? What's that grandma? I've never heard of it!"
"The Calinthro is a different type of demon. They look like you or me, but way taller than the tallest building! Why you would only be the size of their finger you're so small." She chuckles, placing an arm around her granddaughter.
"Wow! That's big!" Jenny giggles. "They must be easy to see!"
"That's where you're wrong. They consider humans pets and will spend years watching them. But while watching them, they look like any other person. It's when the girl or boy they're watching fully trust them that they then turn back into a giant and drag the poor soul down to the Underworld."
"But...then how do you know if it is one grandma?" The child asked with a confused expression.
"You don't. You just have to very careful with you trust." The elderly woman placed a wrinkly finger on the tip of her granddaughter's nose. "Except me of course. You already fully trust me and grandma hasn't done anything."
"Except eat my ice cream!" Jenny folded her arms over her chest with a playful pout before erupting into a fit of giggles. "But I promise I'll be careful!"
"I know you will my dear." She placed a gentle kiss on her forehead with a soft smile. "Now, go ahead and go play while grandma makes dinner."
"Okay!" Jenny gave her grandmother a quick kiss on the cheek before scrambling to the floor. In a few seconds, she was out of the room to allow her to cook.
This was me when I was just a little girl. I'm sixteen now. And I still believe what my grandmother told me. Now more than ever even. See, I have a best friend. At least I had thought he was my best friend. His name is Derrick, and we've known each other since preschool.
We went through elementary and even part of high school together! So you can't really blame me for trusting him. I still kept my guard up though, the whole time. Until just yesterday. It was on my way home when I decided it was time to tell grandma I let my guard down with only one other person when the whole world began to spin, and I fell to the concrete of the sidewalk.
My vision was met with black and red spots, and I couldn't see anything else for at least five minutes. But then I knew I heard a familiar voice from above me. Or below me. I'm not really sure where it had come from, I just knew it was very loud.
When my vision had finally focused I was in a house. But it wasn't my grandmother's, and I certainly wouldn't be able to use any of the furniture. It took a little while for me to realize I was sitting on top of a giant table, and I knew right away what it was.
Now I'm just lying on a rough piece of cloth, with a cotton rag as a blanket. My brown eyes are shut as I try to pretend to be asleep so he doesn't bother me until he wants me awake. Needless to say, I'm terrified of Derrick now. The stupid demon managed to get me to trust him. And now I was regretting it immensely.
"Jenny, wake up." His deep voice cooed above me. It was sickening. I didn't want to move, and I wouldn't have if I knew he could crush my beneath his foot so easily now.
With a groan, I very slowly opened my eyes only to stare into a giant pair of green ones that were glinting excitedly. I knew they belonged to my 'master'.
"There she is, good morning my pet." His giant digits curled around my body and I wanted to throw up from the way his fingers felt against my skin. But I managed to force the small contents in my stomach down.
"I-I'm not your pet." I managed to squeak out, mentally damning myself for the way my voice cracked from fear.
He made a small 'tsk' sound with his tongue and my stomach lurched as the world began to blur around me and I knew we were moving. I still wanted to gag from the feel of his flesh.
"If only you would understand your position my sweet little Jenny. After all, I've been waiting years to finally collect you." His voice was sweet and calm, and I could tell he was trying to lull me into a sense of security so I wouldn't resist.
"Derrick, I'm nothing to 'collect' because I'm not your pet!" I shouted with all the courage I could muster but then the digits around me tightened.
"You will not call me Derrick." His voice hissed as I was practically thrown in front of his face. "You will learn that I am your master now. You will be good for me, pet, or I can make your life completely miserable." His dark green orbs were narrowed dangerously, and the grip around me was tight enough that I swore a rib was going to break.
I just want to go home.
