Why did my father have to be transferred here of all places? Liam asks himself. He had never left England before his father's job brought their family to Ireland. More upsetting than that, though, is the idea of going to an all boys school in this foreign country.
On the morning of the first day of school, Liam rises bright and early to get a headstart on his day. He showers quickly, then proceeds to put on the school's uniform. Seriously, no girls in the whole school and we have to wear uniforms? My parents must love torturing me.
After getting a breakfast of eggs, toast and orange juice, Liam makes his way out to the bus stop and waits. He's nervous about going to a new school and it has only just hit him that he will know no one there at all. Even just getting on the bus is a struggle for him; his stop is one of the last, so there are no empty seats to take. He decides his best bet is to take a seat close to the front of the bus to avoid any trouble with the kids who sit at the back. It isn't hard to tell by the ruckus coming from the back seats that those boys are the ones to avoid at all costs.
In the end, Liam sits next to a blonde-haired boy with pale blue eyes who he thinks looks at least two years younger than himself. The boy is very gracious about the whole predicament, clearing the seat to give Liam space and even attempting small talk.
"You must be new here," the blonde boy states, not bothering to make it a question.
"How'd you guess?" Liam asks. I'm not that obvious, am I?
"I've been going to school with the same set of boys for years now; believe me, I always know when there's a new kid," the boy replies with a smirk. "Anyways, I'm Niall. Niall Horan." He sticks his hand out.
Liam takes Niall's hand and shakes it while introducing himself. "Liam Payne," he says.
After their hands parts, Niall decides it's time for them to get to know each other. "How old are you?" he asks.
"I just turned 15," Liam responds. "You?"
"Really? I'm turning 15 later this month," Niall replies. Upon seeing the shock written all over Liam's face, Niall smirks again. "You thought I was younger, didn't you? It's okay to say yes; I know I have a young looking face."
Liam runs the fingers of his right hand through his straightened brown hair. "Yeah, sorry, I just didn't expect that at all," Liam admits. "So, have you lived here your whole life?"
Niall nods. "Yeah, I have. What about you? You don't sound like you're from around here."
Liam chuckles. "No," he admits. "I was born and raised in England."
After talking for a few more minutes they learn that they have the same homeroom class, but no other classes together. Niall offers to be Liam's first friend at the school, an offer to which Liam eagerly agrees.
Huh, not even at school yet and I've already made my first friend, Liam thinks to himself. He smiles at the thought, but then frowns a little, worried that it might be too good to be true.
