CHAPTER TWENTY SEVEN
❝BEFORE I HELD YOU, I DIDN'T KNOW THAT THE WORLD I WAS IN WAS THIS BRIGHT, I REACHED YOU WITH A SMALL BREATH OF LIFE, IT'S A LOVE THAT CALLED TO ME FEARLESSLY.❞

Tom laid on the bed on his side, his phone in between his ear and pillow. He tried to stifle in his yawn, but he couldn't hold it any longer. He interrupted Reyna halfway through her explanation about the gods, something he couldn't fully understand. But she was more than willing to break it down until he understood everything.

"I'm sorry," he apologized quickly, realizing how rude it was of him to yawn in the middle of her explanation. He prayed that she didn't think he was getting bored, because that was the opposite of it. He was intrigued, more than intrigued, like he was in a trance and the only thing he could focus on is her words. But the way she pieced her words together, the way she described everything, it sounded like poetry. And he could definitely see the writer in her when she spoke.

"It's getting late on your side as well," she informed out of amusement. He heard her ruffle on her side of the line before she spoke once more, "Are you on vacation or something? It's not that late in New York, unless you're not a night owl."

"Uh yeah, I'm in Germany for a few more days before I head back to New York," Tom lied as he mentally slapped himself for not realizing the time difference. Thinking he had fucked up, his train of thoughts were stopped when he heard her laughter once more. It sounded so familiar, almost as if he had listened to this a lot, but nothing clicked for him.

"We can talk tomorrow if you'd like," Reyna promised him quietly, as if wherever she is has gotten so quiet she couldn't help but follow and do the same. He heard a yawn on her side of the line and guilt slowly consumed him for keeping her up so late. "It's getting late, Theo."

"Yeah, yeah it is," he mumbled. Tom closed his eyes carefully as he tried to envision what she'd look like. "Can I . . . can I call you tomorrow?"

There was a pause for awhile and that silence made him feel uneasy. It gnawed his insides as he waited for his response. Did he mess up? Why was he so uneasy?

"I'm sorry, I kind of passed out. But yeah, we should. I'd . . . I'd really like that."
