Lucas sat in the couch in the living room. He stared at the door. He didn't want to go, but his mother was right. Lucas was a curious guy. He loved to experience something new. It wasn't something he did every day. Kimgerton was a small town and there wasn't much to explore.
Lucas thought of the day he heard about Carvington moving here. Everyone was excited to have a new person to join their small town. He remembered how Carvington was an outsider when he first moved to Kimgerton. Everyone stayed away from him because no one knew him.
Lucas looked at the pin on the table. Mrs. Winson, his old babysitter, gave it him. She had told him it was her son's. Her son died in a car accident when he was 18. It had meant a lot to Lucas because he knew how much she cared about her son.
He remembered that when Mrs. Winson came for dinner when Carvington first moved in. "That Crowsby boy is going to start having trouble when everyone starts asking him how." She'd said.
"How what?" Lucas asked.
"How he came to town." She said simply.
"What do you mean?" Lucas asked.
"He's the second one to move into this town. The first was your mother." She stated.
"No one moved here before my mom?" Lucas asked.
Mrs. Winson nodded. "When she moved here it spread like any rumor started here."
Lucas knew that rumors spread fast. Mrs. Winson always said that people start rumors because they're too bored with their own life. "Why did she move here? Kimgerton isn't even on the maps."
Mrs. Winson shrugged. "You should ask her yourself."
Lucas did ask his mother why she moved here. She had said that she had moved here when his father had broken up with her and moved another woman into their home.
Lucas's phone buzzed. He grabbed the phone and picked it up. "Hey," Carvington said.
"Hey, Carv." Lucas said.
"Is it okay if I come over?" Carvington asked. He sounded troubled.
"Yeah, of course you can come over." Lucas said. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm just having problems with my uncle."
"I'll see you later." Lucas said. Carvington sounded like he didn't want to talk. So, Lucas chose not to push.
"Yeah, bye." Carvington said. Lucas hanged the phone up.
"Lucas," Marcus said as he sat on the couch.
"Yeah," Lucas said.
"Are you really leaving?" Marcus asked.
"Yeah,"
"I don't want you to go." Marcus wined.
"I'll be back." Lucas said, trying to cheer his little brother up.
"You promise?"
"Yeah, I promise." Lucas said. Then someone pounded on their front door.
Lucas got up unenthusiastically. He didn't feel like he was ready to leave.
When he opened the door Carvington was standing on their porch. He was wearing a black hoodie. Carvington was rubbing his left forearm.
"Hey," Lucas said.
"Hey," Carvington said.
"Come in." Lucas said. "My birth mother's going to be here soon."
