Chapter 5

Niall’s P.O.V.

The other boys left not too long after Kora dozed off, saying they didn’t want to disturb her and were afraid they’d wake her up. Liam told us how hard she and Danielle worked every day and none of us wanted to ruin her few hours of sleep she’d get. So, I volunteered to stay with her until Dani got back and made sure all the boys made it out of the flat quietly.

Zayn gave me a look that said we needed to talk when I got home and I knew he was referring to Kora. He, as well as the other boys, could probably tell I already had a crush on the girl. I couldn’t help it though, she was different with me than she was with the other boys and that interested me. I wanted to find out why she could act so cynical with everyone else then look at me and turn into this adorably shy girl that would blush when I smiled at her.

I went into the kitchen to find some more food then headed back to the couch, taking my seat next to Ra-Ra again. I couldn’t believe she was actually going to let me call her that. She shifted in her sleep, moving so that her head was now in my lap.

I just sat the for a minute, unsure how to react, then I couldn’t help but smile down at her. I brushed my fingers through her bright red hair, causing her to grin in her sleep. She looked so peaceful, so much less guarded. She looked a lot younger in her sleep, I noted, which made me feel protective over her for some reason.

We stayed like that for awhile, her asleep on my lap while I played her with hair. Kora even slept through Danielle and Liam coming, rather loudly, through the front door.

I held one finger up to my lips, shushing them.

Dani raised her eyebrows at me, dragging Liam by the hand so she could see what was going on. She looked stunned when she saw Kora.

“She willingly fell asleep like that?” She asked, keeping her voice lowered as she sat on the coffee table in front of me.

“She fell asleep on that end of the couch like right as we started the movie, then ended up over here about an hour ago. She moved around a lot in her sleep until she ended up like this.” I gestured to Kora, whose hand was now under the side of her head.

Danielle smiled a little at the younger girl. “I don’t think she’s ever even done that with Riley.”

“Riley?”

“Her jerk of a boyfriend,” Liam explained.

My smile faded. “She has a boyfriend?”

Dani thought about it for a minute. “I think they’re still together. They got in a fight yesterday and I don’t think they have spoken since, so I’m not for sure.”

I pursed my lips, but didn’t respond. I just looked down at Kora and felt a little hurt on the inside. I could feel Liam staring at me, but I refused to look at him.

“I wish she’d break up with him already.” Danielle admitted. “He’s no good for her and just makes her miserable all the time. She deserves someone better; someone like you, Niall.”

I glanced up at her, a my neck heating up. “Why is she even with that guy if he’s so horrible?”

She shrugged, running a hand through her hair like she was aggravated. Liam automatically wrapped his arms around her. “I don’t even know. She says he can be really sweet, but is that worth when he makes her cry?”

For some reason, I couldn’t imagine Kora ever crying over a guy.

“He’s made her cry?” I looked up at Dani, feeling more and more irritated as she continued to explain.

“Yeah, a few times. She’ll never admit it though.”

“I remember you trying to kill him every time it has happened,” Liam said as he peered down at Danielle.

I saw her fists clinch. “Kora’s like my baby sister. That guy is lucky Liam’s usually around to keep from going off on him.”

I looked back down at Kora as she continued to sleep. Seeing her like this, so innocent and fragile looking, I couldn’t imagine anyone ever being able to upset her enough to make her cry and being able to stand themselves. Even when she’s acting all tough and like nothing can phase her like I’ve seen her act all day, I couldn’t understand how somebody could hurt her.

“Why does she act sarcastic with everyone else, but shy and nice to me?” I asked, wanting to get away from the current subject.

“Because you’re adorable and nobody can be mean to you.” Liam stated, letting go of Danielle to grab me in a quick hug.

I laughed at him, pushing him away so he wouldn’t wake Kor. “No, seriously.”

Danielle smiled. “I think she likes you, she just doesn’t realize it. Kora’s never been shy since I’ve known her and I was very surprised by that today. She’s never even acted that way with Riley.”

I’ll admit, that made me feel a lot better. “Really? But has she always been so cynical? It’s hard to get her to really smile.”

Danielle’s grin faded, her brown eyes narrowed a bit. “No, she wasn’t always that way. When I first met her, she was extremely happy-go-lucky and laughed at everything like you. Then she got in the relationship with Riley. It was all fine for the first two months, then he cheated on her with another girl at the dance studio and it kind of broke her spirit. Riley, being his little player of a self, came crawling back and begged for forgiveness. Kora gave him another chance, but she hasn’t been the same since. She’s a lot more guarded now around everyone but me. I think she’s afraid of getting hurt again, so she’s adapted this cynical personality to try to keep people away, if that makes any sense at all.”

My eyes drifted back to Kora’s face. It was all because of this Riley guy that she started not trusting people. Danielle was right; Kora needed to break up with that guy.

I wanted to just hug her, but I was positive that would wake her up. “So, you really think she likes me?”

Danielle nodded while Liam winked and said, “And you like her.”

“Well, I don’t know anything about her other than she’s beautiful and has a horrible boyfriend.” I mumbled, avoiding eye contact with either of them.

Dani scoffed. “Yeah, try getting her to believe either of those things.”

I was about to say something when Kora’s red jeans started ringing. All three of us looked down at the girl asleep on my lap as Maroon 5’s song Payphone played from her phone in her back pocket. Kora’s eyes popped open, widening as she saw me leaning over her. She jumped up, pulling her phone out of her pocket and turning away just a second after I saw that her cheeks were bright red.

“Hello?” She answered her phone, her voice shaky from either sleep or shock over how she had woken up, I wasn’t sure which. “Oh, hey, Riley…” She walked away from us, heading down the hallway to what I assumed was her bedroom.

“Speak of the devil…” Danielle mumbled.
