Chapter 14

This was it.

Twenty minutes before we went on stage for the charity ball. The boys were doing vocal warm-ups, us girls were stretching. I must admit, I was more nervous for this performance than I ever had been for any other. My hands were shaking when I grabbed my leg and pulled it straight up in the air to stretch my hamstring.

Dani noticed my trembling. “Kor, what’s wrong?”

I dropped my leg, switching to stretch the other. “I’m nervous,” I mumbled, looking at the floor.

She almost laughed. “Kora’s nervous? Wow, this must really scare you.”

“I’m afraid of messing Niall up…” I admitted while lowering my voice so only she could hear.

“Sweetie, you’ve never messed up a performance. You’re amazing and you know it. Just breathe, okay? You got this.”

I took a deep breath, slowly exhaling to try and calm my nerves.

“Five minutes!” Paul announced.

We all filed into a line in the hallway we stood in. Niall stepped behind me, tugging on one of my loose curls to get my attention.

He hugged me when I looked at him. “You’ll do great, love. I know it.”

I smiled at him. “You will, too.” Was all I managed to say before Paul opened the door and ushered us to the stage.

The boys ran on first, waving at the teens gathered in the ballroom as they took their places.

“Hello, everyone!” Harry said into his microphone. “I’m Harry.”

“I’m Louis.”

“I’m Liam.”

“I’m Zayn.”

“I’m Niall.”

“And we’re One Direction!” They chorused together.

Cheers echoed through the room. Danielle and I yelled out Liam and Niall’s names, causing them to look offstage to smile at us.

“We’d like to introduce all of you to some friends of ours that will be apart of the performance today,” Liam announced.

Harry gestured to our side of the stage. “This is Raleigh.”

The younger girl did a couple of turns onto the wooden floor, curtsying next to Harry.

“And her twin sister, Rayna,” Louis said.

The other girl ran and leaped to her place, also curtsying.

Liam had a brilliant smile lighting up his face when he said, “You all know my girlfriend, Danielle.”

Dani strutted onto the stage before doing a quick triple pirouette next to Liam. Once she landed, she slipped into a curtsy.

“This is Bailey,” Zayn motioned to the brunette girl who was doing jumps across the large stage to her place.

“And last but not least, Kora!” Niall clapped his hands together.

I ran to the center of the stage then did a capezio jump and rolled to the ground. When I stood up I was next to Nialler, who smirked when I curtsied to him instead of the audience.

“Ready?” Harry asked as all of us girls turned our backs to the crowd.

Josh grinned at me while the band began to play.

“Give you this, give you that. Blow a kiss, take it back. If I looked inside your brain…”

I began my partner work with Niall, trying to stay in character while desperately wanting to smile at him. It was easy to tell he loved being up here, doing what he loved with people he loved. It was impossible for him not to smile while he sang and I did a turn past him, that was obvious.

The ending was here too quickly. Before I knew it, I was grabbing his tie and pulling him around to face me. We were both breathing heavy when our eyes locked, a small smile on each of our faces.

Then it just happened.

We kissed. I completely forgot we were in front of who knows how many people; everything fading away as Niall’s arms went around my waist and mine went around his neck. I hardly noticed when his microphone slipped out of his hand, echoing when it bounced off the floor.

That’s when the audience’s hooting broke through my little bubble.

Niall and I instantly let go of each other, jumping apart when we realized where we were. Danielle was chuckling, Bailey was smiling, and the twins were glaring at me. The boys, on the other hand, were hooting and whistling along with the crowd.

Niall grabbed my hand and we ran off the stage with everyone else so the boys could change for their next song. I knew my face was as red as a tomato and that’s why I refused to look at anyone when we got back into the hallway.

“That was sick!” Niall said, referring to our I Want performance.

Everyone agreed except me. I was too busy biting my nails off and wondering why in the world I had just snogged this boy in front of a hundred people.

“Guys, I have an idea,” Niall suddenly said, pulling me out of my mortified state.

Harry pulled his blue blazer over his white v-neck shirt. “Erm, what’s your idea?”

“Kora should do her solo she showed us instead of us singing WMYB.” Niall flashed me a grin.

My jaw dropped. “What?”

“That’s brilliant!” Danielle agreed, jumping up and down.

“Whoa, whoa, whoa.” I held my hands up. “Why?”

Niall tucked a lock my hair behind my ear, his smile sweet and his blue eyes more adorable than ever. “Because you choreographed it for your audition, right?”

“Maybe…”

“So, since they didn’t let you perform it, you should do it here. Please?” He gave me a pleading look that made him look like a little lost puppy.

Why’d he have to be so darn adorable? “Fine, but I have nothing to wear.”

“Niall, give me your white button-up,” Danielle urged, grabbing my arm and towing me along with her.

I didn’t bother arguing because it was no use.

Niall tossed her the shirt, looking confused as Danielle dragged me over to my dance bag. Dani grabbed my purple crop top and black booty shorts out of my bag along with my pointes.

“Go put these on,” she instructed, shoving me toward the bathroom.

I emerged a few minutes later, carrying Niall’s white shirt in my arms because I wasn’t sure why I needed it.

Danielle took the shirt from me and slid it over my arms, tying it at my waist so it came to the top of my shorts. She left the rest unbuttoned so you could see my purple top and rolled the sleeves up to my elbows.

“There. Perfect.” She smiled at her work before taking me by the hand and leading me to the stage with everyone else.

Paul stared at me when we walked in, unsure what was going on. The boy explained to him that they wanted me to dance and, with some reluctance, he agreed.

Paul took a mike from one of the stagehands. “There’s been a slight change in plans. Instead of One Direction singing What Makes You Beautiful, here’s Kora Benson dancing to Nothing by The Script.”

And just like that I was being pushed back onto the stage by six pairs of hands.
