Chapter 8

“Hey…” I answered, looking over my shoulder to see nine people staring back at me.

“Hey,” he said. “Sorry I couldn’t hang out. My mum showed up unexpectedly.”

I was still cautious. He said that one time before when he was with another girl. Who knew if he was telling the truth now?

“Oh, really?” I was barely able to keep my voice from breaking.

“You don’t believe me?”

“Guess I have trust issues because of what happened before.”

I could picture his eyes rolling as he said, “You’re seriously still hung up on that? That was three months ago!”

“That’s really not much time, Riley.”

I heard footsteps coming closer. I glanced behind me to see Danielle and Niall coming my way. They stopped on each side of me, both wearing a concerned expression on their faces.

“You okay?” Dani mouthed.

I nodded, sliding down the wall to sit on the floor.

Riley groaned through the phone. “I can’t believe you don’t trust me.”

“It’s hard to trust someone after they cheated on you. Excuse me for being hurt by that.”

“Look, I was just calling to see if you wanted to go out tomorrow. If you’re just going to nag me about what I already admitted was a mistake, I’ll just hang up right now.”

I ran a hand through my hair, shoving out of my face. “I have rehearsal for I Want tomorrow and pretty much everyday from now until next month.”

“Since when?”

“Since I agreed to be a part of it. You’re dating a dancer, you should be used to this.”

“I’m beginning to wonder why I ever started going out with you.”

If only he knew how much that hurt…

Tears pricked at my eyes. “I’m going to pretend I didn’t hear that. Why don’t you drop by the studio and we’ll talk?”

“I will if I feel like it.” Click. He hung up just like that.

I did it this time, I threw my phone across the room. It ricocheted off the floor then slid to a stop about twenty feet away. The Otter Box I had it in probably kept it from receiving any fatal injuries. Or at least, I hoped it did. I was totally screwed if I had just ruined my brand new iPhone.

Everyone was watching me again as my head fell into my hands and I groaned out loud. I felt like crawling into bed and never getting up again. Why did I put myself through this?

Niall sat beside me on the floor. “What happened?”

“I’m pretty sure we’re breaking up tomorrow.” I told him, unsure why I trusted him so easily. In any normal situation I would have told him to mind his own business, but it seemed like I never did anything normal around this boy. “He’s mad that I don’t trust him and said he doesn’t even know why he started dating me.”

Danielle took a seat on the other side of me. “Babe, I don’t want to say this, but I told you so. He’s not worth your tears. You shouldn’t have gotten back with him in the first place.”

“I know,” I mumbled, pulling my long legs up to my chest and wrapping my arms around them. “I just wanted to believe he would finally live up to my expectations. I wanted to think he would go back to being the boy he was when I first met him, instead of the jerk that came out a month after we got together.”

Niall put his arm around my shoulders, pulling me in so that my head was against his chest. It was the most comforting hug I had ever gotten. “Don’t cry, okay? Leprechauns don’t like tears. It makes us sad.”

I laughed, wiping away my tears. That must have been the reaction he wanted because he smiled behind me at Danielle, who was probably grinning back.

“He’s coming to rehearsal tomorrow.” I told them, sitting up but making sure Niall’s arm remained where it was.

Niall groaned. “Why?”

“For them to talk, obviously.” Liam stated, joining us by the wall.

“We’re here for you, sweetie. Got that?” Danielle said, moving Niall’s arm to hug me. His arm simply slid down to my waist instead of him letting go of me, for which I was grateful.

Harry came over next. “She’s right you know.”

Louis followed him. “Sure, we don’t know you that well. But Danielle’s like family and you’re like family to her, so that makes you family to us! Not to mention you and Niall clearly get on really well.” He winked at the Irish boy next to me.

I blushed and looked at the ground while Niall threatened to throw something at Louis.

Zayn was the last person to join us, making me realize the rest of the girls had left sometime while I was on the phone. “We’ll always be here for you.”

For the first time, I could see myself beginning to like these five boys.

I smiled genuinely at each on of them. “Thank you guys. You have no idea how much that means to me.”

They all looked at each other, then enveloped me in a massive group hug. I laughed, starting to feel a bit of my true personality bubbling out.

“Can’t breath!” I laughed, not really caring that they were crushing me. Clearly they didn’t either, seeing as they refused to move and hugged me tighter.

I’m so glad Danielle got convinced me to be apart of this dance.
