Chapter 17

“Aren’t you going to say anything?” She raised her brow at me, pursing her lips.

All I could do was stand there with my mouth hanging open. Questions raced through my mind: How did she get here? How did she know where I lived? More importantly, why was she here?

Niall looked at me then at the woman and back to me. “Kor, who is this?”

I swallowed the lump that had formed in my throat, forcing my voice out. “Niall, meet my mother.”

Shock was written all over his face as he stared at her. “Seriously?”

I nodded, going silent again.

“Aren’t you going to invite me inside?” My mom asked, cocking her head to the side. “It’s kind of cold out here.”

That knocked me out of my silence. “No, I’m not inviting you inside. Of course it’s cold. You’re in freaking London and it’s freaking midnight.”

“That’s no way to talk to your mother.”

“Oh you mean the mother that has refused to speak to me in over a year?”

She rolled her eyes. “Don’t live in the past, Kora.”

I scoffed, not believing this situation. Leave it to her to come ruin things when my life was finally going how I wanted it.

“Why are you here?” Niall questioned for me, keeping a firm grip on my hand as though he was holding me back. He could probably tell I wanted slap this woman.

Mom turned her gaze on him, like she was just acknowledging his existence. “Who are you?”

“My boyfriend,” I answered, not caring if we hadn’t actually determined that fact yet.

Niall didn’t seem bothered by my statement. He just nodded his head and waiting for my mom to answer his question.

“Do you not have a name?” She pressed, scrunching up her nose the way she did anytime she wasn’t satisfied with something.

“Niall Horan.” He responded, his tone flat.

“Well, Niall, if you must know, I’m here to bring Kora back to New York.”

“WHAT?” Niall and I yelled at the same time, giving each other panicked looks.

This couldn’t happen. There was no way I would let it happen. She wasn’t going to start controlling my life again.

“I’m not going anywhere with you,” I stated matter-of-factly, grabbing Niall’s arm to prove my point.

Mom chuckled. “Do you really think you can say no? Kora, you’re sixteen. You have to do what I say.”

I took a step back while shaking my head, pulling Niall with me. “No! You kicked me out, why should you care now?”

Niall wrapped arm around my shoulders protectively. I was trembling, both frightened and angered by my mother’s presence. I was scared that she would be able to make me leave, that she would drag me back to New York somehow. It angered me that she was there because it was obvious she didn’t truly care about me. She only cared about me living the life she never got the chance to live.

“Because Joffrey called. They’re willing to accept you again if you want to come back. So, I came to bring you back.” She grinned at me.

“Well, I refuse their offer. Goodbye. Come on, Niall. Danielle’s probably waiting.” I towed Niall with me up the steps, hoping my mom would just disappear into a hole in the ground.

“You think I’ll go away that easy? You’re lucky it’s so late or you’d be coming home right now. Our flight is in two days. You will be on it, Kora!”

I tuned her out, leading Niall through the door and up the stairs to my flat. Dani was still up and could tell something was wrong as soon as I walked through the door.

“How was the-what happened? You look like you saw a ghost.” She led me over to the couch.

I knew if I spoke I would start crying, so I just turned to Niall and buried my face in his chest. I tried fighting the tears back, but came anyway, staining his blue t-shirt.

“Kora, what’s going on?” Danielle asked again, sounding worried as she tried to remain calm.

“We ran into her mum outside. She’s trying to take Kor back to New York because the ballet school wants her.” Niall explained for me, rubbing soothing circles on my back.

“Dani patted my arm. “Kor, sweetie, it’s okay. We won’t let her take you away. I know how much you love it here, so you’re staying right where you are.”

I wanted to believe them, but they didn’t know my mom. They didn’t know what she was capable of. I knew she wouldn’t rest until I was back in New York and that’s what scared me. That’s what she did. She always got her way. That’s why I even auditioned for Joffrey in the first place.

Now that I was somewhere I loved with people I loved, would she really take it all away just to get what she wanted?
