Chapter 12
With a yawn, I rolled over and glanced at the clock, reading that it was currently 4:30 in the afternoon. I had dozed off on the couch, exhausted from staying up all night last night then having rehearsal all day today. I sighed, closing my eyes to drift off again before I realized what day it was.
“Oh, crud!” I shouted, springing off the couch. Niall would be here in thirty minutes to pick me up for our date!
“Danielle, why’d you let me sleep so late?” I yelled, running to my room.
Nobody answered.
I went back to the living room. “Dani?”
Still nothing.
I started to panic before I spotted a note on the table.
Kor,
I went out with Eleanor. Have fun with Niall! Don’t sleep too late ;)
xx, D
I groaned, she couldn’t have woken me when she left? I glanced back at the clock. 4:35. Running back to my room, I headed straight for my closet, thankful I had determined my outfit days ago. I slipped into the white lace dress, pulling a pair of dance shorts on under it because I didn’t know where our date was. Over the dress, I put a button up denim shirt that I left unbuttoned and rolled the sleeves up to my elbows. I cinched in the waist with a narrow braided brown belt. For shoes, I slipped on some knee-high cream colored socks and my shin-high brown leather riding boots.
I turned to the mirror, making sure everything was in place. I decided to leave my hair just the way it was, in its natural waves that fell just past my chest. For makeup I just applied a little bit of black liner to my waterline and a quick coat of mascara. Then I was ready to go.
Just in time to, for just a few minutes after I was done a knock came on the front do.
“Coming!” I yelled, grabbing my brown leather purse and slinging it over my shoulder as I went to the door.
Niall smiled when he saw me. “Hey, Ra.”
I smirked. “You shortened it.”
He chuckled. “That’s not a hello, but I’ll take it. You ready to go?”
I nodded, closing and locking the door behind me.
Niall intertwined our fingers, leading the way to his car. I smiled down at our hands, liking the way mine fit in his.
“So, where are we going?” I asked, climbing into the passenger seat of his car.
“You’ll see.”
“Should I be concerned?”
He laughed, shaking his head. “Nah, I think you’ll love it.”

We got ice cream after we went to dinner and a movie. Niall was right; I did love it. It was dark now and a little chilly, so Niall had put his hoodie around my shoulders as we walked through the deserted park. Nobody else was crazy enough to be at a park at eight o’clock at night. But hey, YOLO, right? Okay, you never heard me say that…
“Want to swing?” Niall asked as I finished off the last bit of my ice cream cone.
“I’ll race ya!” I yelled, running for the swings.
“Wait, wha-oh!” Niall took off a little too late and I beat him to the swings.
I laughed as I jumped onto one of the seats. “You lost, so you get to push me!”
He laughed as well, stepping behind me. “I let you win.”
“Sure ya did.”
He pushed me on the swing for a few minutes before I told him he could stop and swing himself. He reached over and grabbed my hand as we swung, slowing us down and making the swings go in sync.
“Can I ask you something?” He wondered, looking over at me.
“Go ahead.”
“How in the world did you convince your parents to let you move to London by yourself? Weren’t you only fifteen at the time?”
I chuckled once without actual humor. “Yeah, I was fifteen. I lived with my mom in New York and never knew my dad.” I began to explain, staring off into the distance. “He left when I was one and never came back. Anyway, my mom’s the reason I got into dance. She used to be a ballerina, but she was never able to go pro because she got pregnant with me. She wanted me to live out her dream and go to Joffrey Ballet, but I only do pointe for fun. Contemporary is what I really love.”
“What’s Joffrey Ballet?” Niall asked, seeming truly interested in what I was saying.
“It’s a big ballet school in New York. My mom made me audition and I got in, but I didn’t want to go there. I told her I didn’t. I told her I wanted to move to London because I heard about this amazing contemporary studio that a bunch of professional dancers had come from. She basically disowned me after that.”
Niall stopped his swing, pulling me to a stop as well. He grabbed the chains of my swing, turning it so I faced him. “That’s awful, Kora. No mum should do that. What would even make her do that?”
The tears were starting to prick my eyes so I looked at the ground, shrugging. “I guess she hated that for the first time I really voiced my opinion and told her I didn’t want her dream. I had my own goals in life and she didn’t agree with them.”
He stood up, pulling me into a massive Horan hug. “I’m so sorry, Kor. That’s not right. A parent should want their child to live their own dreams, not force them to do something else. If my mom hadn’t encouraged me to audition for the X Factor I wouldn’t be here right now.”
I wrapped my arms around his torso, burying my face in his chest. “I know. My mom’s screwed up.”
“Have you seen her since?”
I shook my head. “I haven’t even talked to her since I came home that day to find all of my stuff in front of our house.”
“I’m so sorry.”
I pulled out of his arms, wiping my tears away. “It’s not your fault. I’m sorry for ruining our first date by telling my sad life’s story.”
He chuckled, grabbing me in another hug. “You didn’t ruin it.”
We held hands again as we made our way out of the park, going back to Niall’s car.
“You’re the first person I’ve told that story to other than Dani,” I informed him as we walked down the sidewalk.
He paused, staring down at me with a shocked expression. “Really? You didn’t even tell Riley?”
“I never trusted him enough.”
Niall leaned down and gave me a quick kiss on the cheek. “Thank you for trusting me, then.”
