Chapter 9

Rehearsal went great the next day. We finished choreographing the dance, which was awesome because it meant we had plenty of time to clean it up and change things if we wanted, meaning we could already make this wonderful dance even more terrific.

We were halfway done running through it fully when the studio door opened and in strolled Riley. Niall paused briefly when he saw the other boy’s reflection in the mirror, missing a turn he was supposed to help me do.

“Keep going,” I whispered to him right before I rolled to the ground with the rest of the girls.

“I want, I want, I want, but that’s crazy.” He continued to sing, grabbing my hand and helping me jump to my feet.

I saw Riley’s fists clinch when Niall put his hands on my hips to keep me in place while I leaned back into an almost-back-bend with my arms going into a V above my head.

“I want, I want, I want, to be love by you.” The boys sang the final line.

Right as the music would be ending, I grabbed Niall’s shirt collar (what would be a tie at the actual performance) and pulled him around to face me, so we were both staring into each others’ eyes. We stared at each other a second longer than we should have before we both laughed and Niall grabbed me in a hug, lifting me off the ground as he did so.

“Woo! That’s the first time we’ve done it with us singing and it was awesome!” Liam stated, clapping his hands together.

Danielle looked very pleased with her work. “That was great! Now we just have to clean it up.”

Riley cleared his throat, causing me to look over my shoulder at him. I had honestly forgotten he was there.

I looked up at Niall, whispering, “I’ll be right back.”

He nodded, wishing me luck.

I was hesitant as I meandered over to where Riley stood, afraid of what was about to happen. Riley was glaring over my shoulder when I finally stopped in front of him.

“What was that?” He growled, his eyes narrowing at whatever he was staring at.

I was taken aback, unsure what he meant. “What was what?”

He turned his glare on me. “That guy. You were all over him.”

“Who?” I glanced over my shoulder, catching Niall’s eye before he quickly looked away. “Nialler? He’s my dance partner. What do you expect? Me to never touch him?”

“We’re together. You should have asked me to be your partner.”

I rolled my eyes. He was seriously jealous? “Yes, because you’re totally a part of One Direction.”

“Don’t give me that. I came here to make up for yesterday, not to deal with your attitude.” He shoved a bouquet of flowers he had hidden behind his back into my arms, scratching me with the thorns jutting out from the stems.

I stared at the wilted petals of the roses, appalled. They looked like they had been dug out of a trashcan or something. There was a note stuck in them. Riley’s eyes widened when I pulled it out of the flowers.

It read:

Dear Emma,

I hope these roses brighten your day like you always brighten mine. You’re the best girl I could ask for.

Xx Riley

I gaped at the note, before raising my eyebrows at Riley. I honestly wasn’t as shocked as I probably should have been. “Really? If you’re going to give me roses you’ve already given to another girl, you could at least have the decency to remove the card. We’re through.” I threw the flowers in his face, turning on my heels and walking away.

I heard the studio door slam as I made it back to my group, but didn‘t bother looking back.

“Are you okay?” Danielle worried, coming to my side immediately.

I thought about it for a second, only to realize I was feeling a heck of a lot happier than I normally did. I smiled at her. “I’m great actually. It’s weird, I thought I’d be upset, but…. I’m really rather happy. Is that bad?”

I saw Niall grin out of the corner of my eye.

“I think that means you knew this was the right thing after all,” Bailey said, giving me a shy smile.

“You know what? I think you’re right,” I agreed, nodding my head.

Niall randomly hugged me, lifting me off the ground once more. “Yay for happiness!”

I giggled-something I rarely did-as he set me back on my feet. “Who’s up for some more dancing?”

Everyone cheered and we got back in our beginning places.
