"So you wanted to see me?" I quietly shut the door behind me so I didn't alert my mom.
"Yea, when were you going to tell me you where moving?" he asked putting his hands in his back pockets, his signature stance.
"You heard about that?" I questioned sitting down on one of the pool chairs and he followed sitting in front of me.
"Emma we may not be dating anymore, but I still have my ways of keeping up with your life," he smiled at me. Meet my ex Bryan. The overly charming, straight A student, linebacker who captured my heart. He's also the brother to my mortal enemy.
"Let me guess was it your mother or Angela dancing with joy?" for some reason his mother and sister were the leaders of the pack against me and my mother.
"Both actually," he laughed looking up at me.
"Figured as much. Just a hunch they don't know your here," I asked looking into his deep brown eyes, gazing at the green flecks splattered through out them.
"You know they would kill me."
"I know, that's why you dated me in the first place wasn't it? Too anger your sister and rebel against your mother?" I always knew that was why he asked me out but in all honesty I loved the fact that us being happy together drove Angela crazy, which only made me happier.
"Well that and you're hot," he laughed. Even though we are ex's we still do get along.
"Shut up," I laughed pushing his shoulder lightly.
"You know those might have been the reasons I asked you out, but not the reason I stayed," he looked deep into my green eyes.
"I know," I looked away, I will admit I still have feelings for him but the night I'm leaving is not the time to rekindle our love.
"Yea just thought I'd tell you. How are you doing with everything? The move and your Dad and well everything," he questioned.
"I'm doing great," I said sarcastically.
"I bet, maybe after all this torture here you deserve a new start," he said looking down at his hands.
"Maybe," I layed back looking up at the nights sky only to avoid anymore lingering looks.
"Maybe," he followed my actions looking up at the stars.
"I know this town sucks but you won't find a sky like this anywhere else," he said and I could tell he was smiling.
"That's for sure," I laughed slightly before we both went silent. Nothing awkward or anything just silent.
"What did your Mom say when she found out about my Dad?" I asked turning my head to look at him.
"You don't want to know," he shook his head.
"Ah come on I can take it," he looked over at me again his look catching the breath in my throat.
"No, her words don't need to be heard," he said before looking away.
"Well I bet she was thrilled," I looked away as well.
The whole reason behind her hatred started way back when they were all in high school here. My dad was the star quarterback, which must also be the reason the town thinks he's still a saint. He lead them to State for goodness sake. Anyways Bryan's Mom was the head cheerleader, so obviously starting QB was her's. Too bad my Dad had his sights on Mom, who was the leader of the dance team. So poor Melinda had to settle for the Running Back. I bet she's happy with her choice now. Although I always have liked Bryan's Dad, Rob, but Melinda just couldn't get over her high school betrayal as she calls it. Thankfully this hateful seed was only planted in one of her offspring.
"So how's rebeka?" did I forget to mention his most recent girlfriend?
"She's fine," he sighed after our long silence.
"Where did she end up accepting?"
"She's going to be a Longhorn," he said sitting up.
"A Longhorn and a Phoenix," I shook my head and he laughed.
"Hey I wanted to follow my Dad's steps," I always made fun of him for wanting to go to Wisconsin but I was so proud he went with his dreams.
"Right, you just want to be a cheese head and being in Green Bay you can go to all the games you want," I laughed sitting up as well.
"What can I say I'm a packer for life," he smiled. I laughed reaching over and grabbing his hand pulling it closer to me so I could see his watch.
"Shit, it's already 11:30," I rubbed my eyes. When I walked out the door it was only 10:03.
"Well I better get going so you can get ready to go," he stood up and I followed. Would it be weird to hug him goodbye? I mean we are ex's but for all I know this is the last time I will ever see him.
""Yea I gotta get Mom up soon anyways so we can head to Dallas," I nodded my head wrapping my sweater over me again.
"Well then," he paused for a moment before wrapping his long arms around me pulling me in close. I smiled as I wrapped my arms around him as well and we lingered there for a moment him rubbing my back.
"You are going to do great there, hell you'll do great anywhere," he said letting go and we started walking towards the house.
"Thanks, at least one of us has hope," I laughed slightly. "I'm really proud of you, getting into Green Bay and all," I nodded my head looking up at him.
"Thanks Emma," he said looking at me one last time before turning and heading in between the houses.
"Goodbye Bryan," I watched him walk away. I looked up at the moom before I started walking towards the back door.
"Emma," he shouted lightly.
"Yea?" I questioned turning in his direction.
"Please don't ever change the way you are, no matter what has happened this year or what will happen when you get to the UK. Cause if you ask me you are pretty perfect," he stared at me from the edge of the house. I looked down at the ground not sure what to say to him, and pretty shocked at what he said.
"Thanks Bryan," I smiled up at him lamely, like really that's all I have to say? Stupid brain.
"Anytime, you still have my number if you can't take it in the big city," he said and before my response he walked around the corner and disappeared into the darkness.
