Chapter Seventeen: Jesper

(Two hours later)

"Nina!" shrieked a women.  Jesper looked up from where his head had been resting on Wylan's shoulder.  Nina's mother rushed over to them, and Nina met her halfway.  They held each other tightly, and then Nina's mom came over to them.  She took Jesper in her arms.

"I called your father, he'd be here but-"

"I know," Jesper sighed, squeezing her tight.  She had always been so good to him, to all of them, like a second mother.  She went over to Wylan and ruffled his hair. That seemed to be how everyone greeted him.

"Where are your parents?" She asked.  Wylan shrugged.

"My father probably isn't letting my mother come see me, and my father wouldn't want to come." She frowned, but Jesper gave her a look that sent her away.  Jesper put a hand on his shoulder as Nina's mom moved to Kaz.

"Why wouldn't your parents want to come? What if you had been hurt?"

"I drove the getaway car, Jesper, the worst I could be hurt is by the harsh words of Kaz," joked Wylan, but his eyes weren't shining. Jesper shook his head, looking at the ground. Wylan was more than just a pretty boy, he was troubled, and that seemed to make him only a little more human to Jesper. He wasn't a merch's haughty son, he was confused little Wylan, and Jesper loved that about him. Jesper looked up from the floor at Wylan, thinking about what he'd done in the car.

Jesper tapped on the tinted glass of the driver seat window. Wylan rolled it down slowly, looking at him. Jesper stole up his confidence from where it lay hidden and smiled down at the boy. Wylan blushed, the red creeping up his neck to his cheeks. Jesper loved that blush, it was adorable. What if he doesn't like it? Jesper thought, but shook his head at himself. He could very well die today, and he wanted to do this.

"Everything okay Jes?" Wylan inquired, and Jesper nodded.

"Promise to come back Jesper," the boy pleaded. He looked so scared, his blue eyes sincere.

"Of course." He put a hand on Wylan's cheek, and leaning down, he kissed him. His lips were as soft as they looked. After a moment he pulled away, and ruffled Wylan's hair, who looked very shocked.

"See ya, pretty boy." Then, smirking, he sauntered to the other side of the car where everyone waited.

(Back at the hospital)

Jesper met Wylan's eyes, and Wylan blushed. But he hadn't said he didn't like it, maybe he was like Jesper. Wylan put a hand on Jesper's shoulder, and Jesper smiled sadly at him. He sat with his elbows on his knees, chin on fists, but he sat up, looking at Wylan.

"What are we Jesper?" he asked, but quietly. Jesper stood up, and led Wylan outside, into the shadows of the left corner by a few trees.

"I don't know what we are Wylan." Wylan faced him bravely.

"I don't want to be just friends, Jesper," Wylan breathed out. Jesper tilted his head, looking down at the boy. His curls glowed in the moonlight, and his blue eyes were so clear.

"I don't want to either."

"Then what are we?"

"I don't know everything Wylan! I'm sorry, I can't answer that."

"Then let me help make it easier. Will you go out with me Jesper?" Wylan stood taller and kissed Jesper, putting his hands around his neck and Jesper's hands went to Wylan's shoulders. Their lips moved slowly against one another's, and Jesper loved it. He held Wylan tighter as he pulled away, but let him go.

"You don't have to answer me now," Wylan told him, then he walked away. Jesper stood still, his heart beating fast, and his eyes not seeing quite clearly. Wylan wanted to go out with him. His face broke into a grin, and he walked quickly to catch up with him. He put an arm around Wylan's shoulders.

"Yes. I'll go out with you."
