Kaz popped in his earbuds, turning his music halfway on. He was listening to Behemoth's Blow Your Trumpets Gabriel. He tucked his phone into the right hand pocket of his trench coat, finding his English class. He walked into the class, and found the final empty seat, one in the back shadowed corner. He limped across the room and dropped into the seat.
"Welcome, Mr. Brekker," greeted the teacher. She was a woman, probably in her late twenties. With brown curls and eyes with deep brown skin. Kaz nodded his head.
"Take out your earbuds," demanded the teacher. Kaz looked up at her, and the look he gave her was enough for her to turn around and go back to talking to the class. Kaz listened, though he didn't look like it, he still wanted too make good grades or else his stepfather would take away his phone, something that was almost as dear to Kaz as his leather gloves. Kaz wrote down his homework and started the small five to eight sentence writing assignment about an influential person in his life, something Kaz was not very fond of doing- recognizing people important to him. The teacher passed out books.
"Stop writing, students. By tomorrow I expect you to have read the first two chapters and have a summary in them. By the end of class, have your paragraph on an influential person in your life done. Now, let's go around and say our names and our favorite book," the teacher smiled. Kaz tucked the book into his binder. Everyone went around and Kaz looked up when the girl beside him said,
"Martha, I like A Court of Thorns and Roses." Kaz smirked, then pulled on the fingers of his left glove."Kaz. To Kill a Mockingbird." The teacher nodded to herself.
"I'm Ms. Sawyer. I like Heathers." (Yes, I did just make two Heathers cameos) Kaz stifled a laugh, it was so cheesy, especially as she shared the same last name as the main character in the book. The teacher turned to the board and wrote down the assignment in sweeping cursive under the homework section for her first class. They were told to keep writing and Kaz read over what he had already written, adding the last two sentences quickly.
–KAZ B.
Not many people in my life have been influential, but a good friend has. She's taught me how to balance my darkness with light. Has helped me through much. I wouldn't be here today if it weren't for her. She's always there for me, and is not afraid of me, and meeting her has definitely changed me. She helps me through the hard days, and understands me. I wouldn't be who. I am without her.
Kaz brought out the book and read the title. Gone with the Wind by: Margaret Mitchell. Kaz flipped open to the first page and started reading.
(Later that day at lunch)
Kaz sat down at his tale, procuring his lunch bag from beneath his coat. Inej slid into the seat across from him, mumbling something. Kaz looked up from his math homework, raising his eyebrows. Inej rolled her eyes.
"It's the stupid language arts teacher. I don't care about how Shakespeare wrote! He won't teach us anything important!" Kaz shook his head and shrugged. Inej kicked his leg lightly.
"How was your day?"
"Fine. My teacher is... questionable." Inej smiled slightly.
"That's better than a horrible one." Kaz took out one of his earbuds so he could hear her better. Jesper slid into the seat beside him, a boy beside him. Kaz looked around Jesper. The boy was shorter with ruddy curls and wide blue eyes. Then Matthias and Nina slid into the seats beside Inej.
"Who's this?" Kaz grunted out. Jesper looked at him blankly, then realization sparked in his grey eyes.
"The new kid Wylan Van Eck." Wylan leaned around Jesper and held out his hand. Kaz looked at it for a moment before swallowing and clasping Wylan's hand, shaking it.
"Kaz Brekker."
