Chapter Twenty Six

After a long day of work, I cuddled with Colby and watched something on TV. Candace turned out to be a good nanny. Esme, however, didn't return. Colby started to panic.

"Where did she go?"

"She left the girls with me at the gym and took off with Tom."

"I WILL KILL HIM."

"No."

"Why did you say no?"

"Killing him won't solve a thing."

"Killing him will solve plenty. She took off leaving you, getting ready for a match, to oversee the girls."

"They're our daughters, Co..."

"I know! However, we both work our asses off and she..."

He stood stone still.

"Honey," I said. "That won't help anything."

"Like fuck, it can't! She's being stupid and when they get back, I'll rip her a new asshole!"

After 20 minutes, I got Colby to relax. We kicked back and watched some movie on cable. That's when I heard my cell phone ring.

"Let me up, it's my cell." I said.

"Fine, okay..."

I got up and answered it.

"Is this Lindsay Lopez?"

"Yes, it is."

The caller sounded grim.

"My name is Officer Mike Lewis. We need to speak to you or your husband..."

I handed Colby my phone and told him it was police. He looked at me strangely.

"This is Colby Lopez..."

"Senor Lopez, I have some grim news for you."

As the officer kept my husband on the phone, I couldn't help but think the worst. I prayed as I saw Colby drop to his knees. I rushed over to him, putting my arm around him. It was the first time I ever saw him cry. The officer told him where to go and what to do when he arrived at the hospital. Minutes pass as Colby finally closed my phone.

"I'll stay here with the girls. You do what you need to do." I said, kissing his chest.

"Gracias, mi amor." He said kissing me. He slid his Nikes on and took the keys to our car. I called the one person I knew I could count on for anything, Rissa.

"Hey this is Clarissa Jerrett, who are you?"

"It's Lindsay,"

"What's happening? Why are you sad?"

"Something happened with Colby."

"Is he okay?"

"I don't know."

"What happened?"

I explained to her what happened and how he reacted. She went quiet for a moment.

"Turn on the TV, honey bear."

I did as she said and watched the news. The reporter was on scene. Behind her, a car wreck that looked horrid and gruesome. I started piecing the parts together and realized Esme was in that car. They pulled a body out of the wreckage. The entire right side of the car smashed into the body of the car. I saw them working on Tom, who looked horrid but alive. I wanted to be with Colby and his family.

"Rissa?"

"Yeah, boo."

"What do I say to him?"
