Chapter 8
"I am so glad we get outhouse duty," Kerri mimicked, plugging her nose with toilet paper.
Kerri and I were stuck scrubbing the girls' outhouse for two hours. It was amazing how people missed the toilet and landed their releases all over the wall, the floor, and everywhere else except the toilet.... how can you possibly miss the toilet if you're a girl?!
It took nearly two hours of scrubbing duty for the outhouse looked relatively clean. We both took a second shower and then headed back to the cabin. On our way inside the cabin, I noticed that there was a small note from Winnie.
"Lunch at grounds, same time. Obstacle course at 2:00.”
-Head Counselor, Winnie
Kerri snorted at the message. It was clear that Winnie was letting this head counselor stuff get to her head. I could always see her striding around the grounds with her select group of counselors, always pointing out some mistake or other.
Kerri and I had lunch with a bunch of girls from Cabin Bobcat. Every now and then, Ashyr and Liam would fling pieces of bread and potatoes from their table. Other than that, lunch went pretty good. While I was eating, Winnie got up on a table and started calling for everyone's attention.
"All right people, listen up. We're going to do the obstacle course in one hour. It's a friendly competition between cabins to see who wins first. The cabin that gets out first will win exemption from any duties for five days. Sounds fun, right?! So get ready and we'll see you in the back grounds in an hour. Wear comfortable clothes... you might get a little wet."
At the word "exemption", I saw everyone perk up. Every kid in this ground wanted the exemption. But it was clear the people who wanted it the most were Cabin Wolf. Ashyr and Joel walked over to our table and plopped themselves in between random girls.
"Alright, no pressure and all... but we've got to win this. Do you realize that we'll be off crap-shoveling duty for five days? That's almost half of our punishment," Joel whispered, trying not to catch the other girls' attention. But clearly, he didn't realize that two guys sitting with eight girls was way past the catching attention stage. It was somewhere in the "Oh my God look everybody! He’s sitting with us!" stage.
"That's nice and all, but you do realize that we have a tiny bit of a....competition?" Kerri snapped. “You can't expect a sure-fire win!"
"Yeah well we better try hard as hell because I really don't want to scrape crap off walls for two weeks!" Ashyr said.
Ashyr and Joel left the table giving me and Kerri menacing glares that clearly said, "You better work your asses and win this for us."
I sighed. I wasn't the best when it came to athletics. I had the overwhelming feeling that I was probably going to ruin this for everyone. Little did I know that Kerri felt somewhere along the same lines.
Kerri and I got up to leave to our cabin, trays being cleaned off and sent to the kitchen duty kids. And that was when I saw the last person I wanted to see today marching up to me, Brigitte Plover.
Her face looked snarling. She stood in front of me, her fists balled up. It was clear that she had applied a ton of foundation and tanning spray on her face to try and conceal the four scratches across her face. But they stood out now more than ever. She now resembled a very angry little oompa-loompa.
"I know you were the one who set the raccoon loose," she spat.
"I don't know what you're talking about," I said, coolly dismissing her.
I watched her face turn a deeper red. “Cut the act, Taylor. I know it was you. I'm just saying you and your little friends better back off," she snarled.
"Is that a threat?" Kerri cut in.
"And if it is?" She spat, challenging Kerri with a menacing look on her face.
"Oh yeah... and I believe this is yours." She flung something at me and stomped off.
"Nice stripes, bitch!" I hollered, picking up what she threw at me. But my body slightly shuddered when I saw what it was. To my horror, I saw the sack that I had taken last night.
How could I be so stupid?! I should have taken it with me! I left it there?! AHHH!
I wanted to smack myself a million times.
"Come on, Taylor. She can't do anything to you. She has no proof it was you. It's not like your name is on that bag or something," Kerri comforted, pulling me with her. We both headed back to the cabin.
But I still wasn't so sure...
