Chapter 25

It had been nearly five days since my outburst. I had been avoiding Joel all week long. I felt stupid after exploding all over Lindsey. No one except Joel and Lindsey knew, of course, but it was still crazy of me. Then again, I'd done a lot of crazy things in camp this year.

It was the middle of the night now. Everyone was dead asleep. I could hear Liam breathing loudly. I couldn't fall asleep for some reason. Maybe I was restless... or maybe it was all that coffee that Liam stole out of the counselor's lounge. But either way, I felt as if I could run a marathon and then still have enough energy to skydive.

I sighed and rolled over. Hundreds of 'What ifs' and thousands of 'I can't believe I did that' rolled into my head. I tended to rethink about things when I was restless. Suddenly, I noticed that Ashyr's bed was empty.

Oh no. This can't be good.

Ideas started flowing through my head. I assured myself that he was probably in the bathroom. Or using a tree... but either way, he wasn't doing anything bad. He couldn't be. There simply had to be a curfew to his brand of unrest.

Suddenly, I felt myself being grabbed out of bed, a hand firmly clamping over my mouth. I let out a muffled shriek, but no one heard. I caught a glimpse of who it was. It could be only one person.

Ashyr.

"What're you doing?!" I hissed, as soon as he dropped his hand

"I want a burger."

I gave him a psychotic look. "A burger? Now?! You're crazy. The heat has clearly gotten to your head."

"Midnight craving. Don't tell me you don't crave a nice cold milkshake right now."

"Are you sleeping walking or something?!" I blurted, surprised at his strange demand at 2:47 AM.

"No. Just answer the milkshake question. Do you, or do you not, want a nice cold milkshake right now?"

"Yes, I do, but seriously, I don't know what you're talking about... neither of us are going to get a good burger or milkshake for a good four more weeks."

"Says you," He casually said. He smirked and held something in front of me. It glinted in the moonlight. It was a set of keys.

Car keys.

"You know what these are?" He silently whispered, "These, are Winnie's car keys, babe."

I was jaw dropped. "Ashyr Scott, you ass! You're going to get yourself killed!"

"Be quiet," He warned. "Dairy Queen or Steak n' Shake?"

"Neither! I don't want to get murdered, and quite frankly, I value my life."

"Two words. Vanilla. Milkshake."

"Ashyr, stop it."

"The cool, milky taste of milkshake sliding down your--"

"No. Forget it!"

"With a cherry on the top."

"Ye-no... No!"

"And, whipped cream." That was it. He stopped me right then and there. I couldn't say no, and my stomach growling loudly at that exact same moment would prove me otherwise if I did.

"Fine!" I blurted.

"Whipped cream... my secret weapon."

"You had me at the cherries." I muttered.

"Count me in." Someone suddenly said. We turned around and saw Liam. He swung off of the bed, his hair wild and messed up. "If it includes hotdogs, then I'm coming."

"Ha, I knew you'd come dude," Ashyr said, lazily high-fiving Liam.

"Who's driving?"

"I will," Ashyr casually said.

"In that case, count me out. I value my life far too much for a hotdog," Liam immediately interjected.

"No, I will," I said, grabbing the keys. "If Winnie's car should be trusted with any of us, it should be me."

"I agree," Liam added.

"How much you all got?" Ashyr said, pulling out a highly wrinkled five dollar bill and a couple of one dollar bills.

I rummaged in your duffel bag and produce $6.53 in loose change and notes. Liam found a heaping total of $0.73 and then stole nearly ten more dollars from Joel's and Jared's bag.
