Chapter 17
Joel&Ashyr's POV
As soon as Ashyr and Joel sneaked into the Lounge, they both looked around frantically for a phone. The Lounge was a simple room, with a few couches, a mini-TV and a vending machine. A few magazines were sparsely spread out over the couches. They spanned the room and finally, they saw a small black phone on a wall. Next to it was a list of phone numbers tacked onto the wall. And the first person on that list, even before the Police and the Ambulance, was Dr. Byers.
There was no phone number for the phone.
"There's no number!" Ashyr blurted.
"No shit! Why would someone write their own phone number down?"
"Oh yeah... I swear it's the bra man, it's getting to my head..."
"Yeah whatever...now what are we going to do?"
"Call the Recruiting center and ask! If not anyone, them... they have to know."
Joel quickly picked up the phone and dialed the number. A moment later, a monotone lady picked up the call. "Hello?"
"Uh... Hi, this is Mr. Scott, father of Ashyr Scott," Joel imitated in a gruff voice. "May I please have the number for Camp Darango? I really need to leave my son an emergency message."
"Uh-huh... hold please," she left Joel on the line with really lame hold music.
Taylor’s POV
Just as Joel was on the phone, Kerri and I saw a distant figure trotting up to the Counselor's Lounge. "Oh crap, that’s Winnie!"
"Damn! We better warn Joel!" I ran up to the window and started wrapping on it.
Joel & Ashyr's POV
Joel was still holding when he heard someone banging on the window. He turned and saw Taylor as she pointed to someone, mouthing "RUN". To his horror, he saw that "someone" was Winnie, and she was merely ten feet away from the Couselor's lounge.
"Ah, dammit lady, answer!" Winnie was now hardly five feet away from the door, her face vividly showing her irritation as she saw Kerri and Taylor standing outside the Lounge.
Just then, the lady on the other line returned. Joel motioned for Taylor to wait for a second.
"Mr. Scott? The number is 053-8735."
"Thank you!" Joel blurted, slamming the phone. But it was too late, Winnie was already at the door.
Taylor’s POV
Winnie marched up to the door, seeing Kerri and I standing outside the Counselor's Lounge. "What are you two doing here?" she snapped, glaring at us.
"Uh nothing... nothing at all... Oh hey! You're looking pretty today!" Kerri suddenly said, in a desperate attempt to distract Winnie.
"Thank you, I know," she said. "Now move aside, I need to make a very important phone call."
"Don’t go in there!"
"Why not?" she retorted, her eyes squinting with suspicion. Without warning, she pushed both of us aside and flung the door open.
"No!" Kerri screamed. "There’s...no one here?" A sigh of relief escaped her mouth as she saw the counselor's lounge completely empty. No one was there.
"Well duh. Now go away. I need to phone someone."
I shrugged. We both turned and were about to leave. Just as we were about to walk away, the phone rang.
