lance sighed, slipping on a pair of socks as he lifted himself off his stiff mattress. the door to his room slid open with a soft woosh, and the artificial light from his lamp spilled out into the hallway. he stepped out into the cold hall, and let the door slide closed behind him, the halls becoming almost completely pitch dark.
lance started his usual way down the hall, walking towards the front of the castle. the nearest lamp was far, far enough for it to be barely visible down the hall, but it's not like lance hasn't been down this way at this time of night before.
he made his way to the main hall, the large staircases opening the hall into the massive, eerie-ly lit corridor. lance silently started down the stairs, but the sound of shuffling feet sent fear down his spine. he panicked, desperately hoping not to be caught as he sprinted quietly towards the end of the hallway behind him. he ducked into the darkness, watching a dark figure revealing themselves in the dim lighting of the corridor.
it was keith, and he looked terrible. the dark circles under his eyes were darker than usual, and his dark hair was completely disheveled. his skin was dark, his usual pale complexion gaining a depressingly purple hue. the dim lamps on the walls revealed streaks of tears against his cheeks, sending worry through lance's head. he and keith had gotten closer recently, finding things to occasionally joke about and having the opportunity to have more serious conversations with each other, but there was still a lot lance didn't know about keith, and vice versa. seeing keith like this bothered lance, especially because lance knew keith had trouble sleeping.
lance decided to step out of the shadows, causing keith to jump at his sudden appearance. "ah, sorry," lance said, his hands out as if he was steadying keith. the black haired boy turned away, hiding his face from lance.
lance furrowed his brows. "keith, what's wrong?" he asked quietly, stepping forward. keith continued to stay turned, his back hunched.
"leave me alone, lance." keith said, almost as a warning.
lance took another step forward, worry strained in the back of his throat. "keith, let me help-"
"no!" keith yelled, turning towards lance. the corners of his eyes were... yellow? an almost neon yellow grew into the center of his eyes, emitting a hazy glow against his high cheeks. he was holding his wrist, his hand had turned completely purple, his fingers coming to a soft point.
"lance, i-i don't know what's happening, i-its never been this bad before i..." keith trailed off, tears forming in his now completely yellow eyes. "i'm scared, lance." he said, almost at a whisper.
lance stood closer to keith as he studied his body. " can i touch you?" lance asked suddenly. he realized how odd his question sounded as keith looked up at him with wild eyes, caught off guard by the question.
"i-i mean, only if you want me to, i don't mean-"
keith took lance's wrist into his claw-like hand, stopping him from rambling. "it's okay."
lance studied keith's face, his expression changing from fear to confusion to comfort as lance slowly ran his hand up keith's arm and up to his prominent jawline, stroking keith's cheek with his thumb. his skin was no longer smooth, but a fine, almost peach-like purple fuzz that covered his entire body.
keith met lance's eyes with surprised innocence before quickly looking away, shedding a tear as he looked down as his feet. "keith," lance said, pain hidden in his voice.
"i-i'm a monster," keith said with a sob, turning his head back up to meet lance's caring gaze. "you shouldn't be around me."
"keith, no," lance said as he enveloped the smaller boy in a tight hug. keith stood for a moment, rigid, before burying his face in lance's neck, continuing to sob. "this doesn't define you." lance rubbed circles into keith's back as he clutched a fistful of lance's tshirt in his hands.
