XVI. The other Jess
I never saw her like this before. Her eyes were sore. Her nose was red from all the crying. She was choking when she said:
Angel: Jess.
I sat by her side. She hugged me. I hugged her back, caringly.
Angel: He left me. He said I wasn’t enough. He feels different, changed. Did I do something? Did he tell you anything?
Jess’: He doesn’t. I’m sorry. It will be all right. Don’t burden yourself too much.
Angel: I wasn’t enough. Why am I not enough?
Jess’: You are. You’re more than what he thought you were. It will be all right.
Okay. Get some sleep.
Angel: Stay. Please.
Jess’: Okay. Don’t worry. I won’t go…
…I never have.
