I ran out of the room, upstairs to my bedroom, and Kian followed me.
Sitting down on my bed, I buried my head in my hands.
"Hey," he approached me. "I thought you would love it."
I took shallow breaths, and finally could speak after several minutes.
"I do love it."
This only confused him more.
"Then why are you crying?"
"Because...It's so great and probably the best gift I ever have gotten, and I didn't get you anything and I feel so guilty about it and Kian...that's a huge gift. I mean, I didn't even know you were coming and you got me...you got me a puppy!"
Kian sat down next to me and pulled me closer to him in a hug.
He rubbed my back in circles and whispered, "It's okay. I wasn't expecting anything. I don't need any gifts."
He lifted my chin to look him in the eyes. "All I needed was you. You are my gift."
I smiled and my tears ceased. He started leaning in towards my lips. I sat up taller, closing the gap between us.
"I love you, Car." He said as he pulled away.
"I love you too, Kian."
"Let's go downstairs. Your parents are probably worried."
He held my hand and led me downstairs, not letting go of me.
We explained everything to my parents. Thankfully, they didn't feel the need to know answers to everything.
I turned back to the box. Lifting the dog out, I got a closer look at it. It was a Golden Retriever, my favorite kind of dog. It was still pretty young, probably only a few weeks old and female. She already had a pink collar around her neck.
"What should I name her?" I wondered out loud.
The puppy licked my face with its scratchy tongue. I thought for a moment.
"I think I'll name her Charlotte. Charlie for short." As if she agreed, she licked my face even more.
My eyes glanced to Kian and he smiled at me. Setting Charlie on the floor, I looked back in the box. There was leash and a squeaky toy in there. I pulled them out and said, "Lets go show her snow. This is the only chance she'll get to see it."
I snapped the leash on and stood up, Charlie following. I grabbed a coat and some boots and Kian did the same. When I pushed open the door, Charlie curiously poked her head out. She slowly began walking out, sniffing everything. When she reached the snow, she licked it. Shocked by how cold it was, she sneezed, spitting it out. Then, she put her right paw in front of her, and touched the strange substance with it. Out of nowhere, she leaped into the snow, completely disappearing, and releasing my grip on the leash.
"Charlie," I shouted, dropping to my knees and feeling around in the snow.
No way was I losing her the first day. My arms searched the pure white snow frantically.
The snow shifted, and she popped out panting.
"Thank god," I murmured to myself. I grabbed her leash and announced I was moving to the backyard.
"Okay," Kian said laughing and following me.
The back yard was fenced in, so I felt a little better letting her play there. I unhooked the leash from her collar and let her explore.
