It was raining. The first day of school. Bad omen.
My mother took me down to the bus stop in her car. As the bus was visibly rolling down the street, a Subaru I had never seen before screeched down Aaron Avenue, and made a u-turn into the space next to my mother. I thought they were gonna smash us into the tree next to us. If things weren't weird enough, I saw a red haired girl run onto the bus. The bus driver, Wendy, beeped her horn to signal me to get on the bus. I gave my mother a hug and slunk out of the car. I darted quickly to the bus and sat in the front seat behind the bus driver.
"So Skyler, how was your summer?" Wendy asked. She knows I don't talk.
I smiled at her, and she got the message. I had had a good summer. We went camping, we went to Cape Cod, and visited my Grandparents in Florida.
"That's good." Wendy said with a wink. I smiled again. I love it when Wendy winks.
When we got to the school, I let everybody get off before me. When everyone finally filed out, I went down the steps of the bus and landed on the concrete of the school grounds. I took a deep breath, and walked to the doors.
The 6th graders had to go into the auditorium for a quick speech from the Principals. Fine with me. I took a seat away from everyone else and sat down. I saw a red haired girl that looked familiar. Hope she doesn't notice me. She didn't. Good.
"Attention 6th graders," the Principal boomed into a microphone. With his giant hands wrapped around it, it really was a Micro-phone. A small plump lady next to him seemed to be the assistant principal. She was about two-times smaller than the other guy. " This year will be one of the greatest of your lives." Yeah right. They were all the same.
Mr. Mahogany; the Principal's name, talked some more about how this year is a big milestone and bla bla blah. Then Ms. Abigails; the assistant principal, started to talk about how great and wonderful the teachers were. She sounded like a nervous wreck, who had just hyperventilated into a paper bag.
After Ms. Abigails finished, the teachers read off the names of the people in their homerooms. A teacher named Mr. Sail went first. Adam Birch, Melonie Buttinton, Derek Canaan, Bridget Durando. The list went on. I listened for my name, nope. Five or six teachers went by and then Mr. Nano stated Olivia Satin, Skyler Shannon. Great. I got up from my seat and walked over to the strait, silent line of students. The redhead girl I had seen a lot this morning came up right behind me in line.
"Hi." She said to me quietly. I didn't answer. Our class walked to the classroom in silence.
