Chapter 16

My phone rang. I waited until I said bye to my mother, on the last ring, I answered. "Hi, Skyler?" The person on the other line said. "Who is this?" I ask. "Its Derek." "Oh, hi Derek, what's up?" I was confused why he was calling me. "I wanted to ask you yesterday, but I couldn't, but, would you go out with me?" I was shocked. I cool guy, a football running back, smartest, cutest looking guy just asked me out! But Payton. She'd be so disappointed. "Let me think about it, I'll tell you my answer tomorrow." "OK, sure, I'm cool with that." He said. Then hung up.

I called Payton as soon as I could. "Derek asked me out!" I say quickly when she answers. "Oh, um.. congrats, you should go out with him." She says. "Wait,...what?" I ask. You guys would look good together. Plus, I'm not gonna stop you just cause I like him a little bit." I was gonna cry. "I could hug you right now." I say. Then I hang up. I felt really bad.

At dinner, I told my mom, "Mom, I got asked out today." She looked up from her phone, "and I think I'm gonna say yes; are you OK with that?" She hesitated, then nodded with a smile. "Only if its OK if I start dating someone." She said. "Its OK with me." I say.

The next day at school, I ran into Derek. "So, you decided?" He asked. I put on a hesitant look, then said, "yes." "Great. I'm glad you said that." He said. The first bell rang. "I gotta go to Health, can I meet you at lunch?" I answered yes. I was so excited.

When lunch came around, I invited Katie to sit with me. "Thanks so much for this." She said. I shrugged and walked with her to the table by the window, or Derek's table. He was with his other friends. I sat next to the space next to him. I let Katie squeeze next to me. Derek introduced me to his friends sitting with him. I introduced the one friend I brought over. Katie was looking at someone, I think it was our old table.

After lunch, Derek and I walked down the hall together. Payton came up behind us. "Hi guys." She said. "Hi." We both said. "You know Payton right?" I asked Derek. He nodded yes. Then Lily walked up behind us. She waited until Payton walked off and then shoved me into a wall. She began, "I don't know what you and Payton have been talking about, but its gonna end.." "HEY!" Derek interrupted. He took Lily's hand and ripped it off my shoulder. "Stay away from my girlfriend." He warned. "Oh yeah right. You are dating that thing." She said sneering. "What, did she ask you out till she was on her knees then you finally agreed so she would stop?" "No, I asked her out." He said. Lily, for the first time ever, was scared, backed down, defeated at her own game. I hugged him. "Thanks." "Don't let her do that to you anymore." He hugged back. Then the fifth period bell rang. We ran into ELA.

During ELA, I felt bad I couldn't stand up for myself. I had to learn how to. What am I going to do when Derek is not there?
