Last designated day in the hospital.
Mom came to pick me up. The doctor gave me something if I start to overheat again. Mom helped me as I wobbled to the car. I feel like I haven't walked in years.
The car ride was complete silence. We went to a Connecticut hospital, but I forget what it was called. I rested in the back seat. I was up all night the night before thinking about what might have happened to me if mom never called an ambulance.
I went to school the next day. I still felt hot, so my mom gave me the stuff the doctor gave her. It tasted horrible. My bag felt super heavy on my back. Mom dropped me off at the bus stop. Lily must have slept over Payton's house, because she was at the bus stop with her. Once they saw me, they shrieked.
"How are you here?" Lily asked. "Are you still feeling OK?"
"Well if she's going to school than obviously." Payton said. She whispered in my ear, "you are feeling OK right?" I nodded. We got on the bus, and Lily sat next to Payton. I had to sit in the seat across from them.
My teachers were surprised when I came back. "I thought you were gone for good." Mr. Nano had said to me. Then he gave me a lot of papers. Probably homework. I got homework from every teacher.
When lunch came around, Payton was sitting on the other side of the table, next to Lily. I just sat in my usual seat, next to Katie. Katie seemed different. Then she smiled. "You have braces?" I asked. "Yep, got em on last Wednesday." She said proudly. We went up to get lunch. I was behind Payton, but then Lily came in front of me. I wasn't going to complain.
I must have fell asleep in school, because I was alone with Payton and Lily behind me, trying to wake me up. I guess I know what that awful stuff does. "Ugh, we're already late for class." Lily whined. "No prob," Payton said, "we'll get a late pass from the nurse, and we'll drop Sky off there. She looked at me, "that sound good?" I nodded.
I learned the nurse is really nice. Her name was Ms. Collins, and she just let me sleep. The beds were blue and bouncy. At the head of each was a hand-stitched pillow. Not exactly a fit-for-a-king bed, but they were OK.
I took the bus home. Payton stayed after school. Said something about getting her grades up in math. Mom was at the bus stop waiting for me in her car. "The nurse called, you fell asleep?" I nodded and said "I think it was the stuff." Mom nodded and drove home. That night, I went to bed early.
