Mitch came out of the bathroom and into the kitchen where I sat, eating my bowl of Cinnamon Toasters. It looked like the shower had helped him calm down, for which I was grateful. He grabbed a bowl and spoon and sat down next to me, pouring himself a bowl of cereal as well. Though I could tell he was still slightly annoyed at me, he tried to play it cool. That's one thing I loved about Mitch, he never made you feel like a jerk even when you probably deserved it.
He snarfed down his bowl in less than 2 minutes and then just sat staring at me, like he was wondering how I could possibly be eating that slow. After a second he seemed to snap out of that trance and asked me how I was feeling about the first day. I didn't really know how to reply, I mean just because it's called High School doesn't me that you can ignore the "school" part. But on the other hand, I had high hopes. "Should be good", a phrase that Mitch himself was famous for was the only thought I could muster, so I used it which got me a slight snicker from him.
Ten minutes later we were off. Sitting in his cute blue Chevy I felt all of my nervous feelings get shoved out of the way as we jammed to our favorite country station. Mitch wasn't a singer-- AT ALL. But when it was just me and him in his little pickup, a switch clicked in his head, and he sang his little heart out. When that happened, it didn't matter what was happening around me, I felt okay. I felt like I could go on. I felt like I could make it one more step, one more day. Feeling this sensation gave me hope for the day. Hope that ended up being much needed.

"BOO!" someone yelled from behind me. I screamed and whipped around whacking my perpetrator in the gut. My first thought was that I should start brushing the dust off my shoulders and say something about being a black belt... Then I realized something. "ASHLEY!!!!" I screamed as I realized it was my best friend that had scared me. We embraced tightly for a long time, thinking that if we were closer somehow all the scary changes that were happening around us would disappear into thin air. I didn't work, but that didn't stop us from our happy reunion.
Ashley Lemon and I have been best friends for longer than either of us or our parents can remember. Though she just lives one city over from me, we hadn't seen each other for a few months. I was so excited to get to go to school with her again. We had gone to Elementary school together, but after a major boundary change that our school district had made, we were forced to go to different Jr. Highs. Today was the first day in three years that we were going to the same school. It was a big deal. Definitely picture worthy. And before you start wondering, yes, we did have the cheesy "1st Day of School" sign. It's just one of those crazy things you do with your best friend, just cause you can.
Way too soon into our happy reunion, we were interrupted by the bell. We started walking to our first classes, that just happened to be across the hall from each other. "Look up into heaven, babe", she said to me. I was confused until I finally did look up. My jaw would have dropped of I wasn't trying to stay cool. The boys. They were tall.
Holy smokes. If this was High School, I might be able to bear it. The little munchkin boys I had gone to Jr. High with were gone and suddenly replaced with these taller, cuter, good smelling, guys!
I turned to Ashley and gave her the eye that you only give to your very best friend. It was returned by a hip bump and wink. We got so occupied pointing out all the cute guys that we didn't realize it as the halls got more and more roomy. We definitely still had our summer brains on too because we didn't even realize that if the halls are empty, that's probably your cue to get to class! All of the sudden the sound of the tardy bell came and I looked over to see Ashley laughing hysterically. "The very first day of school, and we're already late." she said between her contagious giggles. I laughed and gave her a hug, then walked into class.

The first three classes of the day were pretty good. Lots of cheesy get-to-know-you games, boring disclosure statements, and corny jokes from teachers to try to make us like them. Jokes won't cut it though, at least not the ones that they were saying. If you really want to win the hearts of a bunch of teenagers, you give them food. Not another person to remind them of their dad.
I found Ashley at lunch and we sat getting all caught up on each other's lives. I had missed this a lot. Right before we stood to dump our trays, she stopped me. "Who's that kid over there?" She said pointing. "Ohhh" I shook my head, "I don't know what his name actually is, everyone just calls him 'J' Why?" She didn't answer, even though I was positive she had heard me. She just smiled and stood to dump her tray.
She better not be getting the hots for him. I knew him well enough to know that he was not my best friend's type. He was a player and a total jerk. Not a Prince Charming. Therefore not the one for Ashley.
