The doctors were leaning towards his bed, the nurses were there holding the crash cart. It was obviously a code blue. I watched as they tried to shock him but after many tries and doing everything they could, the doctor called it off.

“Time of death: 20:15” – I heard Dr. Lambert

She looked up and saw me; she walked towards me and patted my shoulders.

“I am sorry, Aaron. I did everything I could.” – She said and then walked away

No, this can’t be happening. Hank couldn’t die. He was always late, so why did he go early? No.

I walked towards his bed, he was lying there still. Looking peaceful, his lips were curved into a smile. I looked at him and a tear fell from my eyes. I had lost a friend, my best friend. My friend who always was there for me and I lost him.

He always said that one day he will be early and I will be late, never thought he meant this.

“You won Hank, you reached there before me and you won.” – I finally said in a whisper

I stood there for I don't remember how long but I remember Dr. Lambert dragging me away from his room and I found myself in the interns lounge and finally Dr. Lambert said,

"You are in shock, Aaron. You should go home and rest."

I nodded and left the hospital, I don't know how I got at Joey's home but the next moment I was standing in front of her. Suddenly the thing holding me together broke and I fell down on my knees, hands on the floor supporting myself and tears came out of my eyes. Why him? Why?

I was so deep in grief that I didn't even saw Joey get up with difficulty and come dragging towards me. And she hugged me; I looked up and saw her. I looked into her eyes and they gave me some hope and the strength to hold myself together and I finally came back to my senses and realized what Joey was doing.

I suddenly got up and held her.

"What are you doing?" - I asked

“Trying to comfort you?” – She replied

I looked at her and then carried her.

“You should go sleep.” – I said

“But….” – She was saying but I cut her sentence and said,

“No buts, now go to sleep. You need rest.”

She looked at me for a moment and then finally nodded. She directed me towards her bedroom; I spotted her bed and put her gently down on it. I turned to head back to the lounge but she grasped my hand, I looked back and then she finally said,

“What happened?”

I stared at her for some time and then replied,

“I will tell you when you have rested well, now go to sleep.”

She looked for a second and then she let go of my hand and I rushed to the lounge.

I left her room and then sat on the couch, thinking about the past events. Whenever I became a little happy, a tragedy came. Is this what was left of my life? No happiness and filled with tragedies? I wanted to take a chance with Joey but I was afraid that if I get happy with her it will also end in a tragedy. I needed rest; I hadn’t slept in 48 hours. My eyes felt heavy and finally I drifted off to sleep.
