As she turned, she saw someone standing there; looking at her. She didn't recognize him and it wasn't her fault. She had never met him to recognize him. As she walked past him; he said,
"Your voice is sweet, Joey."
She stopped and looked at him. She thought that how did he know his name? Finally she mustered enough strength to ask him.
"Do I know you?"
He remained quiet for some time and then he spoke,
"My name is Uriah Trance."
A spark shone in her eyes by hearing his name. If what he said was true, he might be related to her dad. As if reading her mind, Uriah spoke,
"Yes, I knew your father. He was my younger brother."
She stood frozen.
"So that makes you my Uncle." - She finally spoke and he nodded in approval
Both remained quiet, none of them knew what to say to each other. Josie had no idea what to say to him, should she ask him about her dad? Or should she just leave? Uriah's situation was no different than her. He knew what to say but he didn't know how to start that conversation. When some time passed and Josie didn't speak, Uriah thought it was up to him now to start the conversation again.
"I need to tell you and give you something." - Uriah finally spoke
Josie, who was staring at her feet at that time looked up and said,
"What?"
She is just like him, very subtle. Uriah thought and then he spoke,
"Can we just go sit somewhere? How about Ashlynn's house?" - He asked her
Josie stared at him in surprise and finally she nodded in approval. She approached him as they started walking side by side. Ashlynn's house was near so they reached there in no time.
Josie felt a little uneasy looking at that place, the last time she was here Aaron was alive and she learned a lot about him. And now she was here yet again but he was not alive anymore. He was 6 feet under the ground, with only memories of him supporting her. Uriah was noticing this, but he remained quiet. When Josie didn't lift her hand to ring the doorbell he became more curious.
"Maybe coming here was not a good idea." - He finally broke the silence
"No it's okay." - She said quickly, not meeting his eyes
He finally rang the doorbell. After a while the door opened and Ashlynn came into view.
"Josie, what ar..." - She stopped saying as her eyes landed on Uriah
"Hey Ashlynn." - Uriah said
"What are you doing here?" - Ashlynn asked
"I had some things to discuss with Josie and with you too." - He replied
Ashlynn looked towards Josie but she was not looking at her. Josie was just standing there, looking at her feet.
"Come in." - Ashlynn said as she opened the door all the way to let them in.
Both of them entered as they heard the door shut behind them. Ashlynn led them to the living room as she sat on the chair. They also sat down.
"So, what is it?" - Ashlynn asked
Josie looked at Uriah, Ashlynn's gaze also swept towards him. He pulled a paper out from his inner coat pocket.
"As you know Ashlynn that I am a lawyer." - Uriah said and Ashlynn nodded
"Mr. Aaron had been my client for the past 9 years." - He added, both Josie and Ashlynn's expressions were uncertain. They were confused and curious at the same time.
Finally Josie spoke,
"Why were you his lawyer? Why did he chose you? It all happened because of your brother, didn't it? So why were you his lawyer?"
Uriah smiled and gave her the paper he was holding.
She opened it and started reading,
Hey Josie,
I guess if you are reading this then you must have met Uriah. He was my lawyer. I was afraid, that's why I asked him to give this letter to you after my death. You must be thinking why him? I told you everything but I missed one tiny detail in my diary. It just didn't fit in within the diary, so I had to tell you some other way. By now you must have known how Joey died, I am sorry but I just couldn't bring myself to write about that loss. I always tried to be strong but I was weak, after her death I was so weak that I couldn't even cry over her death. Crying is not a sign of weakness, it is a sign of strength but I wasn't able to do that. I was weak and vulnerable after her and that's when I met him.
I went everyday to visit Joey at the cemetery, and talked to her for hours. I could always tell that there was someone watching me from behind but I never could see him. One day as I was sitting, talking to her; I heard someone say 'she must be very special for you to come here every day'. I turned around and I saw him standing there, Ulrick. At first I thought he didn't recognise me but he did when he said that he thought that I loved Ashlynn. I nodded in denial and told her that it was a long time ago and I had moved on. I don't know how but something unnatural happened that day. Ulrick and I became friends. We both had loved ones buried there and we just kind of became best buds. I was shocked as I got to know him from close, he was changed. Now he actually tried to care but his nature wouldn't allow it, but at least he was trying. He always used to say to me that he had a daughter and he wanted to raise her like a lady, but he couldn't. Whenever he said this, there was a strange kind of pain in his eyes. He truly loved his daughter. At that time I didn't know he was talking about you. Ulrick introduced me to Uriah. That's how he became my lawyer and friend.
He died of a car accident. I again lost someone who was becoming my friend. We had put our differences aside and were trying to be friends but it had to happen. Ulrick left all his business to you and I was managing it all. And then one day Ashlynn came and told me that you were Ulrick's child. That's why I came, I wanted to fulfil his wish. But now you are big enough to run the company. Uriah will help you and he will be your guide. Run the company your father proudly left you.
This is my last letter to you. I told you my life story and I told you everything you wanted to know. I told you about your father and I told you about Joey. There's only one thing I want to say now to you. I was too late in telling Joey this and I am too late in saying this to you but I am saying this,
I love you
A drop of tear rolled down Josie's face as she finished reading his letter, as she finished reading her roots, her one of the many atom of life...
