Chapter 38
"Don't follow her car so closely!" I yelled at Ashton, and he hit his breaks.
"Stop yelling at me! I know what I'm doing!" He yelled at me from the front seat.
"Guys, calm down." Michael said from the passenger seat, his voice was quiet.
"Sorry, I'm just fustrated." I sighed, running a hand through my hair.
The three of us, Michael, Ashton, and I, were following my mom's car. It was in the middle of the afternoon, and my mom left the house in a business suit. She claimed that she had to work today, but she never works at this time, nor on this day. Something definitely wasn't right.
"She's turning! Turn Ashton, turn or else we'll lose her!" Michael yelled, and Ashton hit the breaks again, making a crash-worthy turn.
"Jesus, maybe I should be driving. I might not have my license, but I'm sure that I could do a lot better than you." I laughed, and Ashton shrugged.
"She's pulling into that driveway, stop here and park the car." I said, watching my mom's car. Ashton parked his car about three houses down from where my mom was.
While Michael and I watched carefully, Ashton played on his phone. He obviously wasn't very interested in what was happening.
"She's walking into the house, drive up a bit closer." I said, squinting my eyes in concentration.
Ashton drove his car one house closer. I could now see my mom hugging someone.
"Wait a minute, I know who lives there. I can't think of who, though." I said.
"Think." Michael said, turning around to look back at me.
I shut my eyes, rubbing my forehead as I tried to concentrate. Who lived there? I honestly couldn't think of it.
"Maybe you could drive past the house and I'll be able to see who lives there? Driving closer to it could possibly spark some memories." I suggested, and Ashton changed the gears of the car. I saw my mom enter the house.
Ashton slowly rolled down the street, and I watched the house. It came closer, then the front door opened again. I expected my mom to come out, making my heart skip a beat, but instead, Tristan walked out. He looked angry, and got into his car.
"That's...." I took a deep breath.
There were so many possibilities to this situation, but I had a feeling I knew exactly what was wrong here.
"Who? Do you know who lives there?" Michael asked, looking at me with curiousity in his moss green eyes.
"Yeah."
"Who?"
"Tristan."
"Really? That was him? He isn't that muscular!" Michael exclaimed, remembering our conversation we had had last night.
"Shut up Michael, that isn't the point! The main problem here is that my mother is in Tristan's house!" I exclaimed, and Michael blushed.
"Oops, sorry." He shrugged sheepishly.
"Why is it bad that she's in this Tristan guy's house?" Ashton asked, surprising me.
"He's not a good guy at all, and hates me with a fucking passion." I sighed, rubbing my temples.
"I'm sure she went there for a business trip or something, don't worry about it Steph." Michael said.
I shook my head, "She wouldn't go to someone's house for an appointment. I have a feeling I know what's happening, though."
"What?" Michael asked, clueless.
"It's possible that -no matter how weird this sounds- she's having an affair. I mean, it always happens in the movies like this, right?" I said, my voice sounding shooken.
"No, I'm sure that your mom wouldn't do that." Michael assured me, but I shook my head.
"My family are lying assholes, they would do anything, but they never judge themselves, they judge others." I spoke quietly. A silence fell over the car.
What if my mom was having an affair? What would happen to my family? Would we be split up? Maybe my dad would never find out, and he would be living with a lying woman. A lying woman which she loved.
Any outcome to this situation was bad, but some would be a little better than others.
