Jesse did the only thing that came to her mind- she slugged him in the cheek.
Blank reeled, grunting as he sat back up. He rubbed his jaw absentmindedly as Jesse stood , shuffling away from him as fast as she could.
"Jesse, Jesse, Jesse," Blank sighed, taking on a bored expression as he stood. Then, turning his gaze to Jesse, he licked his lips delicately. "What a strong girl."
"Yeah?" Jesse squeaked, balling her hand into a fist threateningly. "Want another demonstration?"
Blank stood, brushing off Ethan's jeans with a careful air about him, as if someone was sleeping nearby. He tilted his head at Jesse, considering her with eyes like the Windows blue screen of death. As she watched, an inky darkness spread through them, until they were completely black once more.
"I'm not here to fight," Blank insisted sleepily. "I have a primary objective, with a secondary fallback."
"Alright, Googliplier," Jesse squinted at him, looking around the room for a weapon.
"You aren't going to ask what they are?" the virus asked, feigning hurt.
Jesse's stomach turned. "I think I can guess," she spat. "You're here to win me over and, failing that, kill me."
Blank tapped his nose, giving the girl a thoughtful look. His gaze relaxed, looking almost pleasant. "You're absolutely right."
Jesse stayed silent, glancing at a nearby lamp. If she could get to it, hit Blank over the head again- maybe Ethan would come back. Hell, it had worked last time, right?
"Jesse," Blank sighed, "I don't want to hurt you. And I don't mean that in the cliche way, either." His hands touched his chest mechanically, like an automaton. "I swear, the best thing that you could do right now would be to listen to me, Jesse."
Blank offered Jesse a hand, hope burning in his eyes.
"You're kidding," Jesse huffed. "You have to be."
"Don't make me hurt you, please," Blank insisted. "I'm just fulfilling a task."
A light switch flicked on in Jesse's mind.
She looked around her shyly, allowing a smile to play on her lips. "Blank..."
"Please," the virus pleaded, his hand still extended.
Jesse smiled at him nervously, tilting her head as if she was thinking. She hesitantly lifted her hand, letting her fingertips brush against Blank's ice cold hands.
Blank relaxed. "Thank you, Jesse," he breathed, smiling gently.
Jesse braced herself. "Of course," she said, her voice like silk. Her stomach squirmed as Blank gingerly tightened his grip on her hand. He looked so genuine, too.
"I'm sorry, Ethan," she muttered, grabbing Blank's hand and pulling him forward with all of her strength. He stumbled, off-balance, as Jesse stepped to the side. He careened face-first into the brick wall of the fireplace.
Blank turned around, looking dizzy. His nose dripped blood as he put a hand to his head sleepily. His eyes flashed hazel- a look of shock crossed Ethan's face.
"This- this isn't over," Blank slurred, shaking his head to clear it.
"Whatever you say, darling," Jesse snapped, stepping forward and swinging her elbow into his face.
