Ethan came to in his bedroom, lying spread across his bed like a mannequin.

"Ugh," he groaned, wincing. It felt as if his head was full of bees. He started to sit up, but a soft, firm hand landed on his chest, keeping him pinned gently to the bed.

"Ethan?" Jesse said, her voice shaky.

"J-Jesse?" Ethan blinked at her, his head pounding. His eyes widened. "Holy hell..."

"D-do you, uh, remember anything?" Jesse asked gently. Ethan went pale. He gave a tiny nod.

"Oh my god, Jesse," he gasped, sitting up before she could stop him. But his head swam and his vision darkened, nearly sending him crashing down again. He braced himself against Jesse's arm, swaying dangerously.

"Don't strain yourself, criminy-" she huffed, holding him upright.

"I'm so sorry, Jesse," Ethan squeaked. "Are you okay? I- he- it's-"

"Stop. Ethan, stop," Jesse shushed him, shaking her head. "You're going to make yourself sick if you stress out. Just relax a second. I'm fine. Honest."

She crossed a finger over her heart for good measure.

"Oh, and the pizza arrived, by the way," she added, scratching her head awkwardly. "...yesterday."

"Yesterday?" Ethan yelped. "I was out all night?"

"After around an hour or two you were pretty much sleeping," Jesse shrugged, smiling awkwardly. "I, well, I didn't think you'd want me to call a doctor, so I just looked up concussion and unconsciousness treatment on WikiHow and played it by ear."

She handed him a bottle of acetaminophen and added quietly, "Sorry I hit you."

Ethan rubbed the back of his head, bemused, as Jesse walked out of the room.

She hadn't abandoned him.
