Jesse went back to her apartment that night, despite her best efforts to stay with Ethan. He promised to be safe (not that this mattered anyway) and to text her right away if he felt off.

"He wouldn't show up again now," Ethan rolled his eyes, forcing a laugh.

Jesse locked her jaw. "You're sure?"

"Hey," he said, taking on a high, squeaky voice. "Imma big boy- I gotta take care of myself, Jeeeesse."

Jesse had smiled, worry chewing at her stomach nonetheless. "Welp," she replied, mimicking him, "Thaaa's the truth!" And they laughed, but it felt forced, shallow. The noise of it made Jesse want to cover her ears.

Then, Jesse went home.  She went to bed and stared at the ceiling for an hour before realizing sleep wouldn't come easy that night.

With a sigh, she reached for the lamp by her bed, fumbling for the switch in the dark.

The lamp clicked on without warning, and Jesse started, shielding her eyes. Light flooded her room.

In her doorway stood a silhouetted figure.

"Hello, Jesse," the figure said, leaning against the door frame.

Jesse didn't hesitate. She seized the lamp from her bedside table, holding it like a club lest the monster approach her.

"I'll knock you straight out of him again if I have to," she growled.

"Be my guest," Blank drawled slowly.

Jesse yanked on the lamp, tugging its plug from the wall with a snap. The room went dark as she swung at Blank. But she hit nothing- the lamp arced silently through the air.

Suddenly, the room was filled with an eerie blue glow. Jesse's fan light was on now, though dim. Blank was standing behind her, leaning against her bed with a vaguely irritated look.

Jesse spun around, nearly dropping the lamp in her alarm.

Blank stood slowly, looking Jesse in the eyes. As she watched, he glitched- bits of his skin cut away and his motions were twitchy, robotic. Jesse felt terror in the pit of her stomach. This wasn't like before.

"Swing again, I dare you," Blank growled, leaning forward. Jesse obliged, looping the lamp through the air as fast as she could, with as much fury as she could muster.

But the lamp fazed through Blank's skin, sailing through the air harmlessly. It wasn't to no effect, however- something sinister crept into Blank's expression. He gave a malicious grin, and the world shattered into a thousand multicolored glitches. Jesse rubbed her eyes, stepping back, but she could still see him.

"I'm not really here," Blank explained, running a hand through the wall. Where the skin met the plaster, a slew of rogue pixels shuddered in unison. "I'm a projection. Like a wireless hotspot."

Jesse shook her head, disbelieving. Blank looked away from the wall, meeting the girl's eyes.

"You're quite the fighter, aren't you? I wasn't about to ambush you again. No- clearly that never works," Blank snarled dully. "So now we meet on my terms, where I plan. And you can walk right in the front door. I won't stop you."

"Wh-what do you mean?" Jesse gasped.

"I mean you have two hours to meet me at this address," Blank said simply, dropping a little paper at Jesse's feet. "Or Ethan dies."
