Jesse and Blank planned each others' deaths.
Jesse double-checked California's laws on stun guns and bought herself a taser- Blank sharpened all the knives in the apartment and had the locks changed. Jesse kept her burner phone on at all times in case Blank decided to call. And Blank kept Ethan on a very short leash, holding control of the YouTuber's mind for hours at a time.
And this might have carried on for weeks, with Jesse gathering her resources and putting off that final showdown, and Blank waiting ever so patiently for that fateful day... hypothetically, they could have carried on that way forever, leading the two to gradually lower their guards. They could have forgotten each other, eventually going their separate ways. It all could have ended without a proper ending at all- that is, if Blank hadn't made a shocking discovery just a few days after the failed wharf meeting.
His flashdrive was missing.
Blank took Ethan through the whole house, blooding his hands in a mad search for the precious item- the one thing that could rid him from Ethan's mind. He had just supposed that Jesse had abandoned her meeting at the wharf out of fear- that she'd cowered in her apartment while Blank waited ever so patiently for her.
The thought that he had been so disastrously wrong sent a fervor through Blank's programming. He was created to see every option, every possibility. How had he missed this? How could he be so careless?
Ethan stirred sleepily in his living room one evening with his hands bandaged hastily in cloth.
"Wake up, Blank," the monster himself said, standing over the boy. "You've got work to do today."
Ethan shuddered at the terrible name. "D- don't call me that," he muttered, slowly pushing himself up. The apartment was a mess, as it had been for the last few days. Ethan realized with a pang that Jesse would have helped him clean for hours if he had just asked.
"Your friends are worried about you," Blank slurred. "It's time to put on a brave face and tell them all that you're doing okay."
Ethan looked distastefully at his hands. "Is that what this is about?" he asked. Blank ignored him.
"I thought we could start with Jesse," Blank said kindly, hardly veiling the malice in his eyes.
Ethan felt fear shoot through his heart- a feeling he'd grown used to over the last few days. "No," he grunted. "Absolutely not."
Blank sighed. "I had a feeling you'd say that." And without further ado, Ethan blacked out.
