So far, Jesse knew little. Somehow, Blank had created a backup of both himself and Ethan and was now inside Ethan's brain. But how could Jesse get him out?
She looked again to the three items in the flashdrive. Her attention barely lingered on Blank's own file- she didn't need to deal with him right now- and landed on the text file labeled Instructions. She opened it up and read the message inside aloud.
"Blank," she read, furrowing her brow. "You don't know me, but you will soon. I'll be in touch within a few weeks. This flashdrive will be arriving at the house of Ethan Nestor, where your objective is to infiltrate his mind by befriending him. But you know all of this- it's in your code. What I forgot to add (and what my good friend over here keeps telling me) is that we never actually programmed you with the instructions for getting into his head. So I'm going to explain just that. This flashdrive does most of the work for you- my friend made it. Or, I guess, my friend had someone else make it."
Jesse paused, rereading the last lines. She frowned and continued,
"Just find a way to make an energy arc between the flashdrive and Ethan himself. It doesn't even have to be plugged into a computer. The drive is pre-programmed- it'll install you into his head and make a copy of his mind on the drive. One hundred volts or more should do the trick- just try not to kill him, would you? Hahahaha!
"All of Ethan's files will be connected with each other, so you can be sure it's still him and not some copy. This isn't like that game Soma. Not that it matters, I guess."
Jesse shook her head, not able to believe her eyes. But she kept reading anyway.
"You can hide this instruction page at will, of course- you know how to manipulate code. That's all I have to add- I'll talk to you in a few months. Make us proud, kid. Hahaha!"
There was no signature, no date, no return address. Whoever sent this flashdrive was taking no chances. But it had enough information for Jesse to work with, and her plan was already rewriting itself.
