She had always wanted a 1967 Chevy impala but that isn't what she got. Her uncle Mike had set her up with a nice, black Ford Escape, only a few years old and less than 15,000 klicks on it. It was a standard transmission and she liked that. She would joke with Bobby, who she had to teach to shift, that it was an anti-theft device. It was pretty much all she had ever received from her Dads side of the family.
She had moved out of her mothers house in Welland and moved out to her grandparents house after they passed away. It was about the same time she had finished her undergraduate degree and had been playing with the idea of continuing on with becoming an architect.
Then her mum got sick. Crystal was working by then, still at home doing freelance editing and taking care of mum. Dad was still mostly on the road, doing antique auctions.
They probably thought it was pretty selfish of her to move out to the country and likely even more so when Bobby moved in, but she didn't really care. She had gone with her father on some "road trips" and knew how things worked.
She didn't like big cities anymore.
She fiddled with her phone for a bit, but got bored. She glanced over at Bobby, driving with his left arm on the wheel and his right arm crossing at the elbow, Like a baller. Bobby had leaned out a lot, no longer the needy, chubby kid from high school. He still had the blonde hair but clipped it short and wore some expensive Oakley ballistic sunglasses. She smiled, and he caught her smiling at him.
"What?" He said.
"Nî kê le MA?" She asked, in fairly good Chinese, much better than anyone would expect from a short, blue eyed blonde girl.
He smiled because he knew this one, "Mayo, are you thirsty?" He replied.
"A bit," she said, "could we drive thru a timmies?"
"We need gas anyway," he said.
"Xie-Xie," she said with a smile.
He frowned, not sure of the answer.
"Danka?" She said.
"Bitte, meine Frau."
"Frau??" She exclaimed. "I don't think so."
"I'll keep asking..." he said.
"You do that," she said, but smiled just the same.
