"Okay," Bobby said, "What I don't get is the Chinese?"
"Dad taught in China off and on for a few years," Carrie said. "When he came back he would teach us Chinese to keep his own skills."
"I remember him being away a lot," Bobby said, "but I never knew what he did."
"Not to sound racist," Crystal said, "but most people who speak Chinese don't look like Carrie or me. No one expects us to understand what they say and we kind of can guess if we need to speak Chinese to each other."
"It's definitely become our secret code," Carrie said.
The area beneath the pumphouse was like an old bomb shelter, which it probably was, at one point. The fridge was stocked and there were lots of cans of food.
They were sitting around a kitchen table, old and comfortable except the chairs were like new.
Carrie waited until Crystal was sitting. "Have you seen the house?" Carrie asked.
Crystal just shook her head. She took a deep breath, and asked "How bad is it."
"Not going to lie, it's pretty bad," Carrie said.
"I'll let you two talk," Bobby said stood and went to look around.
"Be careful in Tim's room," Crystal said.
Bobby nodded and left the room.
Crystal waited for a moment and then stood again to go get more coffee.
"I was hoping you were Tim," Crystal said, with her back to her sister pouring some more coffee. "Want some coffee?"
"Sure," Carrie replied, "Where is Tim?"
Crystal turned with two plain white mugs of coffee and returrned to the the table. She seemed to be thinking, chosing her words. "I don't know."
"What happened Crystal?" Carrie asked holding the cup in both hands, watching her sister.
"He yelled from the living room," Crystal said, "THEY'RE COMING AND I CAN'T STOP THEM." She took a long sip from her cup. "That's what he said and then 'GO TO THE PUMPHOUSE AND LOCK YOURSELF IN."
She took another sip. "I can't tell you how scared I was... I am," she took another sip and Carrie could see how her hand shook. "And then he said 'I LOVE YOU CRYSTAL' and kissed me, then said NOW RUN."
"Oh my," Carrie said, "I'm sorry Crystal."
"Ya," Crystal says, tears starting to run down her cheeks. "You know how he is, Carrie. I love that man more than I've ever loved anything, more than I thought I ever could love anything. He would talk a lot, but he doesn't often say that. He believes in words having power and he doesn't just let that word slip out. I was hoping it was him at door."
"I know, you weren't expecting us. It's worse, Dad is missing."
"MISSING!? He was missing our whole childhood Carrie. Him being missing when people need him is nothing new. He was here a few weeks ago and brought books and a few things and was gone again, like always," Crystal said.
"That's a bit harsh," Carrie said, "but how can we help here."
"Come with me to the house," Crystal said. "Let's finish our coffee and go look."
"What about Bobby?" Carrie asked.
"Him too," Crystal said. "I have to go feed the animals, anyway."
"BOBBY!" Carrie yelled.
Bobby came back in a few minutes and it seemed like it took longer than it should. When he did appear he was a bit ash faced, and Carrie looked at him puzzled.
"We want to take a walk up to the house," Carrie said.
"Good idea," said Bobby and he strode across the room and picked up the shotgun.
They went up the staircase and through the pumphouse door. Crystal closed the hasp and locked it. Their Dad had always told them not to lock anything unless they were holding the key and that is another habit the sisters shared.
They started walking up the path with Bobby in the lead. He had tucked the shotgun into the crook of his right elbow, pressed into his side.
"他还好吗"(ta hai hao ma)[Is he okay?] Crystal asked.
"You know what I like most about your family?" Bobby asked in a voice that was a little too loud.
"我不确定,"(wo bu que ding)[I'm not sure], Carrie whispered, as Crystal answered Bobby.
"No," Crystal answered, "what do you like about us?"
"The unwavering brutal honesty you have with each other." He stopped and turned around looking down and staring at Crystal. "So, do you want to tell us why there is a dead body on a slab in the other room covered in symbols and a book in Latin on necromancy next to him??"
