It was well after midnight when they got to the Hilltop.
They locked the door and slept really well. It was going to be a long day.
They got up around 7:30, like they did most days. Bobby woke up to the usual routine, a long pee and twenty push ups. He had a shower and a shave and the car keys. He kissed Carrie on the forehead and jangled the keys as he headed out the door.
Carrie pulled the covers tighter as a useless fight against the morning cold. She pulled her phone and the light from the tiny screen pierced the darkness of the room. She knows it's already fairly light outside but her window was in the shadow.
She looked hopefully at her text messages waiting to see something from her father, her sister or her brother in law.
There was nothing.
She got up and crossed the cold tiles to the toilet and looked in the mirror. She never looked directly in the mirror, not since she was sixteen. The shower was still damp from Bobby and he was kind enough to leave his old towel on the cold tiles in front the shower. It was a little glass booth with a moldy matt peeling up from the wet floor. There were tiny packets of soap and shampoo still left on the window sill. Bobby had left her some body wash in the shower.
She started the shower and turned on the fan. She closed and locked the bathroom door.
The hot water felt good, the heat and the pressure releasing some of the tension in her muscles.
She was out of the shower and brushing her short blonde tangle of hair when she heard the door and Bobby yell "Hey" from the other room.
"What's the password?" she yelled from behind the bathroom door.
"Extra large double double and a bacon and egg sandwich."
"You may enter," she yelled, then exited the washroom to claim her tribute.
Bobby was sipping on his own coffee and gave her a wide, uncontrollable grin when she entered the room wrapped in just a towel.
She smiled back and lifted the lid of her coffee, 'I hope he never stops looking at me like that,' she thought.
"So, what's the plan?" Bobby asked.
"Well, I'm going to call work in a few minutes," she said. "I don't work until tomorrow anyway."
"I was thinking we should go back to the farm. See what we can see in daylight. Maybe feed and water the animals," Bobby said.
"And check the magic pumphouse," Carrie said.
"Yes," Bobby said," I think it'll be safer under the light of day. I'm going to settle up and check to see if there is any news."
"I hope he's okay," Carrie said.
"I'll see what I can find out," Bobby said, leaving and taking his coffee with him. He pulled the door tight behind him.
She changed into the clothes she had brought for the trip, a big blue hoodie, a white t-shirt and a pair of jeans. It looked like it might be hot today, so she just wrapped the sleeves of the hoodie around her waist. After she dressed she ate the egg on a bisquit and worked away at her coffee.
She looked through the drapes and watched him walking across the parking lot. His head was down and his hands were in his pockets.
It didn't look good.
She opened the door before he got there and gave him a big bear hug as he entered the room.
"He's still alive," Bobby said, squeezing her back. "He's in the I.C.U. and they don't know which way this is going to play. There's a big scorch mark on the ground where we lit the thing up."
"We didn't have time to watch it burn, Bobby," she said.
"I know," he replied. "I just hate to be unclear about these things."
"Should we stop in and see him?" she asked.
"Probably not," he replied. "We are probably starting to build a bit of a file with all the weird things that are happening with our plate number and phone number attached. I think we should do what we need to do and move on."
He gave her one more big squeeze and kissed her forehead.
"At the very least we should get out of the Hilltop before our friends make bail."
"Good point," she said, and then grabbed her bags from the room and hauled them out to the car.

Don't worry, I'll be back to put more into this.
