Chapter four

Oh. My. Gosh. I am sitting next to Shawn mendes.
I get to give Ruth something she's wanted for a very long time. I get to introduce her to her future husband.
He seemed very nervous until we got in Melanie's truck, then told us all about his family and asked about each of ours and how we met.
After about thirty minutes of being on the road, Melanie pulls over for gas and to walk around a bit.

Awkward, I jump out of Eddy (Melanie's nickname for her beloved, crappy truck), and wait for Shawn to do the same. I get Melanie a coke and skittles, myself pringles and hot coffee, while Shawn turns pale at a basket full of ½ priced tomatoes and gets some French fries. I get two tomatoes for Ruth.

After putting the snacks into Eddy, we walk around while waiting for Melanie and after waiting a few minutes with no sign of her, I get slightly embarrassed explaining that I'm not worried because she's slower than a snail. A grandma snail that has a broken hip. And can't walk.
Everything is great as we walk in circles around Eddy, until we see another old pickup pull into the slot next to us, and damn it.
My heart sinks the moment I recognize the driver, and I feel like crying.
What the heck is Dean doing all the way out here? With a pretty city girl in the passenger seat of his truck.
Last year, I poured my heart out to him. And he stomped on it. Of course, Ruth did kick him in the balls. But that didn't help the fact that he ground my heart into pixie dust.

"Hey, you see that guy?"
"Yeah."
"Listen we need to make him jealous ok? Just go along with it."
I grab Shawn's hand, shuttering. Yeah he's hot but listen personal space, okay? Ew this is too close.
He leans against the truck, one hand on my hip and the other holding both of mine.
He leans in close, and whispers that this is ridiculous because whoever this guy is, he's not worth it.
I ignore this because it's the same thing Ruth has said since last year. And so I kiss him. It was weird.
But I realize that they're both right when I recognize the girl as his sister, and when Dean looks at me with pain in his eyes, and says he was going to call me but obviously that didn't matter now.
And I let him walk away, yet again.
Damn it.
