Chapter seventeen
Liz came over around midnight, but was gone whenever I woke up.
Before I even shower, I hop out of bed-shoes and everything already on.
Without thinking, I hop into my blue rental truck and head over to Ruthanna's house.
I don't notice the traffic, I don't notice the sun or the fact that it's 9am on a Saturday and she is probably just now waking up, if not still asleep.
I march through the door without knocking but only reach the living room before she is there, staring at me with awe and holding Rolando in her arms.
"Ruthanna..." I plead, feeling my heart break even more.
"No, Shawn. I'm sorry."
I stare at her, trying to process what she just said and not quite accomplishing anything.
Tears pour down her face, and she slowly shakes her head as her arms wrap around the whole forming in her chest.
"You need to leave," she choked out.
"Now. Please."
Without another word, I turn and walk to the door and out my car without thinking. I make it two blocks before falling apart.
I grab the notepad I keep in the console and begin writing.
Because that's the only thing that I know how to do without her.
