"My feet hurt..." Jamie cried, slowly dragging her feet across the dirt floor.
"I know..." I whispered grabbing her hand. "We'll find a place to camp out for the night soon. I promise."
A few months ago, I had killed her mother.
Afterwards I had to convince Jamie to come with me. That her mom would want her to keep carrying on. In reality, I have no idea what her mom wanted for Jamie. I know she doesn't want this for Jamie. No one wants this for their kid.
As we made our way down the abandoned road, we heard the familiar moans and groans of zombies coming from behind us. Jamie gasped, gripping my hand tighter. "Ally!"
"Run!" I began to sprint, squeezing Jamie's arm. It seems every goddamn day, the stupid walkers get faster and smarter. They began gaining on us, and Jamie was starting to slow down.
"Ally..." Tears ran down her face, as did sweat. "I can't..."
I grabbed her upper arm and pulled her harder. "Come on, Jamie, we'll be okay."
"Ally." She completely stopped running and dropped to her knees. "I-I'm getting light headed."I dropped to the ground next to her and quickly reached for the water bottle on the side of my bag. But it was empty. "Jamie, I'm out of water. We have to keep going, we'll find some water soon, I promise." I stood up and grabbed her arm to pull her up.
She was seriously out of breath and I was scared she was going to faint. "Okay." She mumbled. I shot down a few walkers before grabbing Jamie's hand and running again.
We ran for about fifteen minutes through the woods. Jamie pulled on my arm and I stopped running. I turned around to make sure she was okay, and once we locked eyes, she fainted. But I caught her before she could fall onto the ground.
"Jamie, no." I shook her body, but she wasn't waking up. I huffed, lifting her into my arms and then I ran. Her short, curly brown hair bounced as I ran. Her dark brown eyes were closed and her small body fit perfectly in my arms.
I ran for about ten more minutes and I thought we were far enough away from the walkers. I laid Jamie against a tree and she curled up around it.
I had to get water soon, or she won't make it. I looked at my surroundings and spotted a small pond between the trees.
I took a deep breath, lifting Jamie into my arms once again. I laid her against the closest tree so I could fill up the empty water bottle.
I was lost in thought about a plan to get out of here, when I hear Jamie scream. I drop the water as I stand up, pulling out the gun from my belt, all in one swift motion. I look down at Jamie and my heart stops. My stomach drops, and I think I'm gonna throw up.
"JAMIE!" A walker had bit into the side of her neck. Before the dead man could bite her again, I shoot him down. I run towards Jamie who is crying and screaming. I push the dead walker away from us as I drop to the floor next to Jamie.
Blood pours out of her neck as I move her small head into my lap. I put my hands on the sides of her cheeks, wiping her tears away.
"Ally." She cies, blood soaking her shirt.
"Shh..." Tears fall from my eyes and into her dirt/blood covered hair. "It's okay." I cry. "You're going to be okay."
She's scrunches her nose as she cries harder. "I-It hurts, Ally."
"Shh..." I cooed, stroking her hair. "It's okay. Just close your eyes. You're going to be okay."
She sniffled, squeezing her eyes shut. And soon enough, the pain washed away from her face and her whole body relaxed. That's when I knew...
My little sister was dead.
I took the knife from my belt, clutching it hard in my blood stained hand. I balled as I stabbed the knife into the side of Jamie's head. As much as I dreaded doing this, I couldn't let her turn into one of those monsters, because she's not. She didn't have a single mean bone in her body.
That night I buried her next to the tree she died at. I picked fresh flowers and laid them against the dirt pile. Because like the flowers, she deserves something beautiful.
After that night, I never went back.
I still have her bunny she had given to me the night her mom died. I kept it tucked away in my backpack and would never be able to give it up.
Ever.
