__________________________________"Why can it not be Batman?" I said, folding my arms and looking angrily down at Hailey. She shook her head, her ponytail flipping along. "Because Barbie only likes Ken."
"Ken is a self-centered mirror-loving bitch." I quoted along to what Zach said, every time he saw Ken within his sight-range.
Hailey gasped, covering her mouth with both of her hands. "Charlie, you used bad language." Then she smirked evilly, declaring in a sing-song voice. "I'm gonna tell mom, I'm gonna tell mom."
My eyes widened, as Hailey stood up from her ring of dolls. I began to imagine all kinds of punishments mom would put on me, and this scared me.
"Hailey, no!" I exclaimed, grabbing her right leg to stop her from going to mom. She lost her footing, and yelled as she fell down on the marble tiles.
At first, it was quiet. After a second, Hailey turned her head back, and I saw her red, scraped chin. Big, fat tears began streaming down her cheeks and she burst into an audible cry.
"Sssh, Hailey, ssh." I ran over, and crouched down to her, patting her furiously to try and stop her. If mom caught me hitting Hailey this time, she'd feed me to the crows!
"Here you can hit me!" I whispered, taking her hand and repeatedly smacking it behind my head. "Stop crying, Hailey."
"MOM!" She yelled, her face red from crying. Before I could try anything else, she shoved me aside, and ran into the house. I bolted after her with stretched arms, trying to stop the incoming tsunami that would erupt later.
Hailey disappeared into the kitchen, where mom was frying something by the stove and Zach was on his mobile phone on the kitchen table. I skidded to a stop behind her, listening to the tattle-tale complain everything to mom.
When she was done, mom's eyes switched up to me.
I could see fire in them.
"Noah!"
She realized she had said the wrong name. "Cart-"
Then she shook her head. "I mean Elijah!"
"You're almost there." Zach spoke up from behind, his eyes trained on the phone. Mom turned back, and slapped him behind the head, earning an 'Ow'.
Then she turned to me. "Charlie! I did not expect this behavior from you!"
I could see Hailey pass a smirk from the corner of my eye. "But mom, It was an accident! I was trying to stop her!"
"Stop her from what, exactly?" She demanded. Her neglected omelette overcooked on the pan, and i wondered why nobody sensed the burnt odor yet.
"Um...I...uh." I tried to find a suitable excuse. I should've known it wasn't worth a try, because Hailey was standing right here.
"Mom, Charlie swore." She emphasized the word with a triumph. Mom's head snapped to me. "What?!"
"I heard it from Zach!" I immediately passed the blame, and Zach almost dropped the phone in shock.
"What?!" He repeated what mom had said.
Now mom's head snapped back to an incredulous Zach. "Zach!!" She said in a deadly voice, and I could see fear flash in my older brother's eyes.
"Zach always says that Ken is a self-centered mirror-loving swear word. And Charlie repeated after him." Hailey pointed out, folding her arms and giving a smug smile.
Zach and I glared menacingly at Hailey, who equally gave back a bold stare.
She doesn't deserve to live.
"The two of you, go to your room! You're grounded! And I don't want to see your butts roaming around even on the terrace." Mom said, pointing at the door for me and Zach to leave.
"Aw, c'mon!" Zach protested with a flail of his arms, making his way towards the door. But mom stopped him. "Hand over your phone. Until you learn to control your dirty mouth, stay away from any electronic device."
Zach stared at mom in silence. Mom raised out her hand, and gestured to place his phone there. The teenage boy walked forward, and reluctantly placed the device.
As we both walked out, Zach leaned in and whispered to me. "You and Hailey are dead, chipmunk."
He ruffled my hair, and walked up the stairs, quietly. I had no clue whether to take this as a sign of death, or a sign of death, revival and then another death.
"My Omelette!!" I heard a yell from the kitchen as I made way for my room.

The next day, Hailey burst into the kitchen sobbing, early in the morning.
Someone had pulled out the head of her Barbie doll and had replaced it with Pinocchio's cut off head.
I gulped, grasping my neck protectively.
