They broke up in June. When school ended her family had planned a summer long vacation for before she left for college, and with the two of them going away to different schools it made sense to just break it off now before they were hurt by the distance. She had not seen him since June of their senior year and she hadn't spoke to him since then either. But with their freshman year of college at an end and Lydia planning a party for all her friends it was only a matter of time before they would meet again. She expected nothing more than small talk and friendly conversation with Scott McCall, though she longed for far more.
As Y/N stepped onto Lydia's porch the door was swung open and she was enveloped in a massive hug by Lydia.
"I am so glad you're here I have missed you so much."
"I've missed you too. I can't believe it's been a year already. How time flies." The two women laughed as they walked into the house. Everyone was already there sitting around talking and when she walked into the room she was greeted by a round of hugs from her friends. It had been so long since they had seen each other and yet it felt as if one day had passed and they were right back to how they were the last time they were together. Scott stayed seated on the couch, looking into his drink. He felt awkward, he had never intended to feel awkward after their break up but here he was a year later still brokenhearted and wishing he could be anywhere else. As everyone sat back down the only seat available for Y/N was right beside Scott; she sat down next to him on the edge of the sofa trying to imagine herself anywhere but here. Still in love with Scott, she couldn't stand to look at him knowing that the second she did he would heart her heart jump. As conversation started up again Y/N and Scott both kept their attentions away from one another.
This worked most of the night. The group drank and caught up but soon it was time to go home. As everyone left Y/N walked up to Lydia
"Hey Lyds, I am too drunk to drive home. Do you think you could give me a ride." Lydia frowned at her friend before shaking her head.
"I'm sorry Y/N I am not exactly sober myself," Y/N sighed and contemplated walking home when Lydia's eyes widened and she squealed with a solution. "I know! Scott! Scott come over here," Scott walked over to Y/N and Lydia desperately trying to avoid contact with Y/N. "Y/N is too drunk to drive, will you drive her home? Thanks." Before Scott could even respond Lydia was off saying goodbye to the rest of the pack. Scott turned to Y/N and looked at her for the first time that night. She hadn't changed much since the last time he saw her, she was still beyond beautiful.
"Come on let's go." Scott walked to the door with Y/N trailing slowly behind. He had gotten a ride with Stiles and Y/N had driven her car so she handed Scott the keys as she climbed into the passenger's seat and buckled up. The car was filled with an awkward silence, something the two of them had never known together. Ever since they became friends no moment they spent together had been like this. The awkwardness between them was palatable and the silence was deafening. Scott tried to break it with small talk.
"How have you been?"
"Good."
"How is School?"
"Good."
"How's your fish?"
"Good." The silence enveloped them again and this time Y/N broke it.
"How's Melissa?"
"Good."
"Deaton?"
"Good."
"Derek?"
"Good." The silence kept taking over like it had a mind of it's own but Scott was determined to speak again.
"I've missed you."
"I've missed you too." Y/N looked at her hands as she twiddled her thumbs.
"Have you really?"
"Yeah, of course I have. Why would you think otherwise?"
"Because you broke up with me." Y/N looked over at him shocked.
"I did no such thing, it was mutual. Don't you remember?"
"I remember you bringing it up and I agreed because I wanted you to be happy."
"I only brought it up because my mom said it would be wrong to hold you down when we would never see each other."
"We could have found a way. We were only an hour apart. It wouldn't have been that difficult. But that doesn't matter now because you moved on."
"I moved on? Are you serious? After we broke up and I spent the entire summer wishing I was here with you. And every weekend I wanted to jump in my car and drive to your school and kiss you until I could breath again because being away from you is like being in a constant state of asthma attacks. I couldn't breath. For a whole year, I couldn't breath; but I thought that's what you wanted. You didn't even hesitate when I brought it up and so I never pushed it. I loved you. I still love you." Y/N was screaming as the tears ran down her face. Scott pulled to the side of the road and placed his head against the steering wheel.
"I did drive to see you. Once. I walked on to campus and I saw you sitting in the quad, you hadn't seen me yet but I saw you. It was like the third week of classes and when I saw you my heart leaped into my throat. Then I saw you sitting with some guy, a really nice looking guy, laughing and touching him and you looked so happy that I didn't want to take that from you because I loved you and I still love you."
"I was trying to get over you. But it didn't work. Nothing ever worked because I love you Scott and I think I always will." Y/N took Scott's hand in her's and squeezed it three times. Scott squeezed her hand back just like they used to do in high school.
"I think I'll always love you too."
