I walked down the main stairway to the morning room where I was not suppose to be. I looked around and stomped my foot in frustration before dropping the basket. My spirit showed up as he sat in one of the chairs. I looked at him and put my hands on my hips.
"I don't suppose you know how to get to Mrs. Winchester's Daisy bedroom, do you?" I asked the spirit. He stared at me and I sighed.
"Talking to a spirit now?" Luke asked as he walked into the morning room. I turned around and blushed.
"Or the wall. This house gets lonely when you haven't see anyone for a while," I lied and he nodded.
"I can see that point of view," he said as he nodded. "The Daisy Bedroom is upstairs." I smiled and looked away.
"That does limit the search," I said as I pulled out the map that I made on a piece of paper from my apron. Less of a map and more of a list of each floor. I wrote that the bedroom was on the second floor.
"What is that?" he asked as he looked at the paper I started refolding. I smiled and showed him.
"A list of rooms and their floors. It's easier to find places when I am lost. I, at least know what floor I am generally on," I said and he laughed.
"That is slightly ingenious," he said and I smirked.
"I just wanted to make sure that I was heading the right way," I said and he shrugged.
"I'll walk you to the Daisy Bedroom," he said as he offered his arm. I shook my head as I picked up the basket and he took the basket from me.
"I could have carried that," I said as we walked to the stairs and he laughed.
"I'm only a butler. I still do work," he said. I looked up at him.
"Like what?" I asked as we reached the top of the stairs. He turned and I followed.
"Well, for starters, I have to wait on the lady and her niece," he said, "and I do my fair share of chores." I raised an eyebrow and we laughed.
"There you are, Sam. We have been looking for you," Braxton said as he walked up to us. I cocked my head a little.
"I just got a little turned around. Luckily, Luke knows where the Daisy Bedroom is," I stated. Braxton looked at Luke and Luke just smiled.
"Seems oddly convenient that you just happened to know that she was lost," Braxton said. I looked at Luke who lost his smile.
"Why were you looking for Samantha? All three of us have things to do," Luke said.
"Madalynn was worried that she couldn't find her way to the Daisy Bedroom," Braxton said sharply.
"Well, clearly, I got it covered," Luke said and they stared at each other. I huffed.
"Now, gentlemen, either someone is going to lead me to the Daisy Bedroom or I will try to find it myself," I stated and they both looked at me.
"I'm carrying the basket," Luke said, challenging. Braxton stepped to the side and gestured for us to go. I went first and Luke followed.
"What is it between you and Braxton?" I asked.
"We just bump heads a lot," Luke said and I raised an eyebrow. "The Daisy Bedroom." I looked at the door and took the basket.
"Maybe you two should talk it out," I said as I opened the door. I walked in and I heard Luke walk away. I looked up and saw a blonde girl in the room. "Hello?" I asked. She turned around and pushed up her glasses.
"Hello. I didn't know that anyone else was coming in," she said as she lowered her duster.
"I wasn't aware that someone else was in here," I said as I walked to the bed to change the sheets.
"I haven't seen you around," she said.
"It's only my first week here," I said. She shook my hand.
"Gillian Lowe, or Gilly," she said.
"Samantha Smith," I told her and she flashed me a smile.
"Welcome to the house," she said and I smiled.
"Thank you," I said as I pulled the blankets off the bed and put them in the basket.
"I am just going to finish up and be out of your way," she said and I looked at her.
"I just have to change the sheets. If anything I am in your way," I said and she laughed a little.
"You are so nice! At least nicer than Luke," she said. There it was again. Luke made the bad guy of the household.
"Everyone seems to be against Luke. He seems like he is kind enough," I said and she laughed a little.
"Luke is someone I would never talk to if I had the choice and I want to be friends with everyone," she said and I laughed a little.
"That is clearly true," I said. She smiled at me and put her hands on her hips.
"Now, I don't want you getting all tangled up in Luke's affairs or him. He is a shady character," she said, "Like that Robert Lee, if you were for the Union."
"I guess I can see what you are saying," I said but I didn't. Luke seemed nice and helpful.
"Gilly, Samantha, are you guys done?" Madalynn asked as she walked in and I looked over.
"Almost," I said as I dropped the sheets in the basket. Madalynn brought in the new sheets and blankets.
"Here let me help," Madalynn said as she threw the sheets out. We worked together to make the bed in record time and then Madalynn grabbed my arm.
"What's wrong?" Gilly asked. Madalynn looked at her.
"I'm not sure what I hear and I need confirmation," she said and she pulled me to the hall. It was silent for a moment then I heard it.
Thunk. Thunk. Thunk.
Thunkers.
"Find a guy," I said as I ran to the stairs. I ran down. The thunkers that loud meant that it had to be removed quickly.
"Samantha! What's wrong?" Braxton asked as I ran into him and Luke. They seemed like they were arguing and yet I didn't care.
"Thunkers," I said, pointing up at the sound. They both ran to the basement and I followed as they opened the boiler.
"Shit!" Luke yelled and Braxton shovelled some of the ashes out.
"Samantha, get out of here!" Braxton yelled as he noticed that I was still standing there. Why hadn't Madalynn just told us? Why did we have to finish our chores first? Oh right. Because we were women and she may have been hoping that the men would have done it.
"Samantha!" Luke yelled, over the noise. It was so loud and I knew the guys had to hurry. I braced myself on the railing and they worked faster. I closed my eyes and slowly it got quieter. I opened my eyes to two very ash covered boys. They looked at me and I sighed.
"You're covered in smoke and ash," Braxton told me and I looked at my skirts. I was.
"I was scared," I whispered.
"You should have gone up. It would have been safer," Luke said.
"The house would have exploded. It won't make a difference," I said and we all stood quietly, only our heavy breathing filling the room.
