I was finally nine months pregnant. I had been adjusting to being the head of the maids. Max had built the nursery completely and Madalynn was helping me with everyday tasks. Mrs. Winchester wanted me take time off but I didn't feel a need to. I was pregnant, not glass.
"Samantha, lifting too much weight will make the baby weak," Madalynn said as I tried to carry two stacked baskets of laundry to the wash room. I sighed as she took the baskets from me and I walked next to her, slowly.
"I am not useless just because I am pregnant," I told her and she glanced at me.
"I know that but you are nine months pregnant now. We don't want you to hurt the baby," she told me and I sighed as we walked into the laundry room. Everyone that was in laundry room looked at my stomach before they looked at me. I smiled at them and they all continued to work. One of the maids left their sinks so I could stand there and wash clothes.
"Thank you," I whispered and she nodded as she walked over to the clothes line. I turned on the hot water and plugged up the sink so I could wash the dishes. Madalynn put one basket up on the counter for me and the rest on the floor.
"I am going to help hang the clothes. Don't try to pick that up by yourself," she said and I nodded before she walked over to the clothes lines to hang clothes. I scrubbed the first piece of clothing in the water after the sink was filled. Suddenly, there was a pain in my stomach. I held my stomach and tried to support myself on the sink. I took deep breaths that made some of the girls look at me.
"Go get Max," I said and the girls all started running around.
"The baby is coming?" Madalynn asked as she tried to support my weight. I nodded with a smile before I screamed from the pain.
*
"Where is Max?" I screamed as I had another contraction. Madalynn tried to keep my body temperature down by patting my forehead with a towel. Mrs. Winchester had one of the other butlers go fetch the doctor and no one could find my husband.
"Everyone is trying to find him. I am certain that he will be here before the baby is born," she said and I dropped my head on my pillow.
"I am so sorry that I am so late," Max said as he ran into the room. I reached my hand out to take his hand and he took my hand. I squeezed his hand as I felt another contraction happen. He bit his lip as I screamed.
"The baby is going to come out today," Madalynn said.
"I would have never known that," I said and Max rubbed my knuckles.
"She is telling the doctor, darling," Max said and I looked at the door where the doctor was. I screamed and squeezed Max's hand in response.
*
Six hours later, the doctor handed me my beautiful baby boy. He was crying and I exposed my breast in response in order to feed him so he would eat and stop crying.
"Luke... my beautiful baby boy," I whispered as he drank and Max moved my hair out of my face.
"You did so well, Sam," Max whispered and I cuddled Luke to my chest as I tried to burp him. He burped a little and I laughed a little bit as I brought Luke back down to look at his tiny face.
"Mr. Jameson, if you will come with me to sign some papers," the doctor said as he packed his bag. Max kissed my forehead as he followed the doctor.
He is a beautiful child, the dead Luke said as he appeared in the corner. I held my baby to my chest more and the dead Luke looked at me.
"You can't be here anymore. You are dead and I have my baby, Luke. Please leave," I told him and he nodded.
I just wanted to say good bye to you before I do, he said and I nodded. He slowly disappeared and I kissed baby Luke's little head as I got more comfortable in the pillows behind me.
"You are so beautiful, Luke. I will love you and care for you and protect you forever," I promised him as I rocked him. He made a sound and I laughed a little bit. "I love you too," I told him as I heard someone walk in. I looked up and found Mrs. Winchester walking into the room.
"Hello Samantha. Is that the baby?" she asked as she sat in the chair next to the bed. I lifted Luke a little more so she could see his face.
"Mrs. Winchester, meet Luke Jameson, my baby boy," I said and Mrs. Winchester touched the baby's face.
"He is beautiful, like his mother," she told me and I smiled.
"Thank you, Mrs. Winchester," I told her and she smiled at me. He made more sounds and I looked at him as I moved the blanket from his beautiful face that was starting to open his beautiful eyes.
"You look good as a mother," she told me and I smiled at her.
"Thank you, Mrs. Winchester," I said and Max walked back into the room as I put my cheek on my shoulder.
"Mrs. Winchester, how are you?" Max asked as I noticed a piece of paper and pen in his hand.
"I am doing well. Samantha gave you a beautiful and strong son," she informed him and Max stood up a little straighter.
"Of course Samantha did. She is from a strong family," Max said but I didn't react to what he said because I was into take care of my son and watching him look at me.
"Indeed she is. Do you want to have Samantha sign the birth certificate so the doctor can leave?" Mrs. Winchester asked and I looked at Max who put the certificate on the table and handed me the pen. I signed it with one hand so I could still hold Luke and then dropped the pen so I can hold my son closer to my chest again.
He was so beautiful.
