Brenton and I looked up from the taxi at the Winchester residence and I swallowed the lump in my throat. The taxi driver dropped my trunk on the sidewalk as Brenton and I got out.

"This is as far as I am going," the taxi driver said as he got back into his carriage. Brenton attempted to pick up my luggage and I felt terrible since I was only carrying a small box with my journal and books that I loved.

"Come on, Samantha," Brenton said as he started leading the way to the house. I sighed and opened the gate.

"Brenton, I can just go get some help," I said. He shook his head.

"We are Smith's. We don't ask for help, Sam," he said as I led him to the back door. I knocked as I shook my head and Luke opened the door.

"You can put down her trunk. I'll get two of the carpenters to bring it in," Luke said. Brenton looked at me and I nodded. He put my trunk down and Luke stepped aside. I walked in but when Brenton tried to follow me, Luke blocked him.

"Let me through," Brenton said. Luke shook his head.

"Mrs. Winchester doesn't want any guests in the house. You can say good bye on the stairs," Luke said. I was taken aback but I nodded and went to hug my brother.

"Good bye, Brenton. I will try to visit you soon," I said and Brenton nodded.

"Best of luck," Brenton said as he stepped back. I nodded and stepped into the house. I waved as Luke closed the door.

"Follow me. I will show you to your room," he said. I followed him as he walked straight. "I would recommend taking the steps three or four at a time." I looked at him as we came to a flight of stairs. Stairs that were no more than two inches high.

"Why is this-" I started.

"So Mrs. Winchester can walk up the steps," he responded. I nodded as we started going up the stairs. "The stairs to our rooms are normal since Mrs Winchester isn't really going up to the third floor."

"How many floors are there?" I asked, softly. I didn't really want to know the answer but at the same time I really wanted to know. He stopped at a window and looked out.

"See that tower over there?" Luke asked. I looked out the window and nodded.

"What about it?" I asked as my eyes traced the tower. He smirked and I looked at him.

"Seven stories," he told me and I felt my jaw drop a little. "Come on. Madalynn has been waiting for you so she could show you around and then work."

"Why is Mrs Winchester building all of this?" I asked as we walked up a flight of easy risers.

"For the spirits," he said as we down a flight of stairs. I looked back and realised that we didn't even walk up ten stairs only to walk down seven.

"The spirits?" I asked as we continued. He glanced over at me and I furrowed my brow as he shook his head and looked forward again.

"In Connecticut, Mrs. Winchester was told that the spirits of those killed by the Winchester gun was haunting her and she need to keep the evil ones away and build a house for the good ones," he told me. I nodded as we came to a flight of regular stairs.

"Good morning," Madalynn said. I smiled as we walked closer to her.

"Good morning, Madalynn," I said as she looked at Luke.

"Don't you have deliveries that need to be signed for?" Madalynn asked Luke and he shook his head as he chuckled.

"I'll be in the kitchen if you need me," Luke stated as he walked away and Madalynn grabbed my hand.

"I'll show you the room and maybe you and I can do some of the chores together," she said as she walked down the unfinished hall. I touched the wall and smiled. I had a job. "Now that we are going to be working together, can I know your name?" she asked, drawing me from my trance.

"Samantha," I said. "Samantha Smith."

"Well, I'm Madalynn Carr," she said. I smiled and she smiled back as she opened the door to a simple room. "And this is yours." I took in the room with the white sheets and simple flower patterns.

"It's beautiful," I breathed and she laughed a little.

"Wait until you see the rest of the house," she said. I smiled at her and watched as two carpenters came in with my trunk. I put my books on the bed and went to them.

"Put it at the foot of the bed please," I said. They nodded and put it down before leaving me with Madalynn once again.

"Well, we have to clean the main stairwell. We might be able to knock it down in a hour together," she said as she stepped out of the room. I followed and we walked down to the first floor.

"How is building all of this from the ground?" I asked. Madalynn laughed and shook her head.

"It's not from the ground. She took a farm house and built on it. She is an insane genius," she told me with a lot of hand motions and laughter.

"I couldn't tell," I laughed as she took me to a storage closet with the cleaning supplies. She handed me a duster and took another duster. "Is the stairs really that long?" I asked. She shook her head.

"Not really. We just have to move for the carpenters and the foreman," she said as we started walking again towards the main stairwell.

"Maybe together we can work fast enough not to run into them," I suggested.

"Maybe but they are really handsome and all muscle," she told me as we got to the stairs. I sighed and then noticed that there was something in every corner.

"What are these?" I asked as I tried to move them. She laughed.

"Those are our life savers," she said as she walked to the top step and knelt down. I came up next to her and started dusting the top step.

"Coming through, ladies," a guy said and Madalynn and I ran to the opposite wall and waited.

"Hi Joshua," Madalynn said as they put the box they were carrying down. The red head whipped his head towards her and smiled.

"Hi Madalynn. How do you do?" Josh asked. Madalynn blushed and looked down.

"I'm doing fine," Madalynn said as she played with her skirt.

"I haven't seen you around," the other guy said as he nodded towards me. I looked at him and he smiled.

"I believe that is true, considering I have never seen you either," I said as I went back to work. He seemed to get a determined look.

"Madalynn, give me a hand?" he asked.

"No can do, Braxton," she said with a laugh. Braxton. That was a beautiful name.
