As I entered Mrs. Blain's office, I looked around to see no one else there. Are we the only ones today who got dentention? I thought to myself. But then I realized that those people normally enter late. I walked over to an empty chair, which was lined up next to seven other chairs against the wall. I sat down and gently placed my backpack in between my feet. I was the only one here, which is already not normal, Mrs. Blain wasn't here, and there should be at least two more people here. One kid, a senior, got in a lot of trouble last year and ever since he has had to go to detention everyday for one hour. Luckily, I don't have any classes with him, so we stay pretty distant. No one is for sure about what he did last year, but I've heard that he vandalized the school in the summer going from sophmore to junior and that's when it all began. I doubt that because they would have started to punish him earlier than the middle of junior year. One girl claims he raped her, but no one believes it. She even went to the doctor and he suspected she was lying. She doesn't have any emotional scars, but I slightly believe that. It sounds like something he would do. Another girl claims he killed her best friend. But that didn't happen. Her best friend went missing over a month before this all happened, and besides she was pronounced dead a week after he got caught and she actually got in a car crash. It turns out she was just trying to escape our little town and it backfired because of the accident.
Peer entered the little room/hall and stood in front of me. "What's up, Babycakes?" I asked her, trying to lighten the mood.
"Move." She demanded, coldly.
"Why?"
"Move over there." She said pointing to two chairs over, which is on the edge.
"Alrighty." I grabbed my bag and moved to the chair on the end. She nodded once I sat down and walked over to the other end. I stared at the empty space between us. We were separated by six chairs, but you could still cut the tension in the air with a knife. "Peer." I called towards the lifeless body after five minutes of awkward silence.
"Jaren." She called back.
"I'm sorry."
"Shut up." I sat back in my chair and stayed quiet. Mrs. Blain boomed into the room, without looking at us, and went over to a small desk. Too small for her. "Alright, goodafternoon-" She stopped to look at the papers on the desk. "Mr. Blake? And Ms. Williams?" She slowly looked up at our sad faces. At least, mine was sad. "I would never have expected this from you two."
"I apologize." I call out.
"I apologize, too." Peer shot a look at me as if to say "Thanks for making me look bad." Either that or "I will gut you like a fish." Mrs. Blain looked down at the papers again and nodded. "Okay," She started, "Mr. Blake you will be going to Room 202. And-" She studied the papers even closer to make sure. "Ms. Williams, same room."
"Mrs. Blain." Peer stood up, which scared me. "I don't think we should go to the same room."
"That is the order, Ms. Williams."
"No, please! That is not a good idea."
"Peer, please calm down."
"Please, switch me into a different room!"
"I cannot do that, Peer. Let's go you two." I stood up to lead the way out of the room and open the door for the both of them. Mrs. Blain exited the room without looking back at Peer. "Please!" She called.
"Sorry, Babe. That won't happen." I replied to her whining.
"Shut your face." She said to me, kicking my shin, as she exited. I pressed my lips together and bent over to rub my leg.
We entered into the art room and I placed my bag on the nearest desk. "Why are we in here?" I could sense Peer's attitude already.
"Well. We have decided that whenever someone goes to detention, they will paint a picture for the school. So. Here you go!" She shoved a paint brush and canvas into our hands. She left the room and I placed my canvas on the nearest easel. Peer sighed and began to mumble as she saw that the only easel still open was, to her, a little too close to mine. I got to work automatically and began to paint a tiger, our mascot. I won't boast, but I have to say that I am a pretty good artist.
We sat in silence for thirty minutes, painting. "Jaren." Peer turned to face me holding her paint brush, while crossing her open arm across her body.
"Yes, Sweetheart." I loved seeing her crinkle her nose every time I called her a name like that.
"Can you help me?"
"With what?" I rinsed off my paint brush and carried it with me to her canvas. I could see it was supposed to me our school colors in an abstract form. "I don't know how to paint this part." She replied pointing to a white corner on the canvas.
"Well, do you mind?" I asked, with my paint brush millimeters away from her paint. She shook her head and I dipped it into the blue can. "You could do this." I suggested while making a swirl pattern.
"No!" Peer screamed trying to get my brush off the canvas.
"Why not?" I added more swirls while she was pushing me.
"I didn't want swirls!" She knocked my hand and the blue line went all the way down her canvas. "Jaren! You ruined it!" She yelled at me.
"It wasn't my fault! You pushed me!" I backed up a few steps and Peer pushed me again. I noticed my foot was caught on the easel's leg and it came crashing down on me as I fell to the floor. The canvas landed right on my chest and the blue and gold lines printed on my shirt. "Peer!" I yelled up to her. She covered her wide open mouth with her hands and ended up painting over her eye with the red paint that was on her paint brush. "Ah!" She screamed as it trickled down her face.
"Help me up." I said pushing the canvas off of me. She moved forward and her foot tripped over the cart that carried the paint cans, she flailed her arms and accidentaly knocked over the green can, spilling all over the floor. "No!" She screamed, watching it splatter everywhere.
"Just come here!" She began to walk slowly towards me, but with her wedges on, it made it hard to walk over the paint. I just waited for her to slip, which made me feel worse when her body came flying towards me and sloshed the paint around. She kept only one eye open, because of when she accidentaly painted over the other, which didn't help our situation. I tried to sit up, but kept slipping from the paint. She, too, began to stand up, and actually managed it. She reached her hand towards mine and I grasped it. I began to stand up, but she quickly lost her balance. She grabbed onto the side of the cart to keep balance, but it backfired. Once I stood up, she slipped in the paint and took the cart with her. The cart trampled me and we all fell down with a thud. I laid there next to Peer on the floor, covered in a mixture of paint, watching her struggle to get back up. After a few more moments of struggling, she quit and laid on her back. She breathed a big sigh and looked over at me. "You know?" She questioned me, as we both rolled over to our sides.
"What?" Her elbow supported her head and she looked deep into my eyes, as I did the same to her.
"You look better in blue." She said as she scooped up the collection of blue paint in front of us and smeared it on my face. I spread it around more, laughing along with her. "Hey." I replied after wiping it out of my eyes.
"What?"
"You look better in red." She squealed as I smeared a glob of red paint in her face. I laid looking at her laughing. "I got a question." I said as I scooted closer to her.
"Shoot." She replied smiling as she scooted closer.
"Wanna make some purple?" I grinned as she giggled and pressed her lips on mine. We laid on the floor for a few minutes until Mrs. Blain entered. She made a huge gasp as she saw the mess we laid in. "You two. Detention. 3 hours. Monday." I mocked her as she stared at us. She nodded her head in agreement with me and left to find Mr. Miller to clean the mess. Peer turned to look at me and widened her mouth and squealed in laughter. "Best detention ever!" She yelled, looking as beautiful as she ever has.
