Over the next few days, almost everyone Maya knew came to see her. First, her family, then the band, and then just some of her friends. Even David from our apartment building came to see her. She was finally starting to talk normally now, but she was still in a lot of pain, which I completely understood. She was in a terrible car crash for god’s sake.
One afternoon, we were lying down together, just staring at each other, not saying anything. Doctor Cartwright walked in to check on Maya.
“Hello doctor,” Maya said rolling over to lie on her back.
“I just wanted to make sure you’re okay,” he said.
“I’m still hurting, but it’s better than a couple days ago,” Maya breathed out.
“That’s good to know,” he said checking her heartbeat again and finding her pulse. She stayed still and waited patiently. “Can I check your eyes too?” Doctor Cartwright asked.
She nodded. He told her to look completely straight and he shone a light in her eyes. He did the same with the second eyes and put the little flashlight in his jacket pocket. He checked where she’d gotten surgery to see if it was healing alright. Everything was fine.
“You look good Maya,” he said taking a step back, “Hopefully you’ll be able to walk after today.”
“I sure hope so,” she said smiling, “I feel like this room is closing in on me…”
“We’ll see how you look in a couple days, but for right now, you’re looking fine and healthy, for the most part. You’re still a little roughed up, but your bruises on your arms and legs have almost completely gone away. You might need to go in for a couple x-rays to see how your ribs and leg are healing, but they’re looking fine if I say so. Now tell me, what hurts the most right now?”
She looked straight ahead and I took her left hand in mine. She didn’t look at me but acknowledged my gesture. “Probably… my leg.”
Doctor Cartwright nodded, “I would think so… Well just take it easy and keep it elevated and it should heal in a couple months, but you’ll be out of here by then.”
Maya nodded and smiled, “Thank you doctor.”
He nodded and walked out of the room. I leaned on my elbows and smiled at Maya.
“Hello beautiful,” I said smiling.
She turned her head and started to lean in. I smiled even more and kissed her lightly on her lips.
“Harry…” she whispered.
“Yes?”
“It’s been an entire month…”
“It has…”
“I’ve missed sleeping with you…”
“You have no idea Maya, knowing my wife is in a hospital bed with a broken leg and a couple broken ribs really gets to your head.”
