A WEEK LATER
I walked slowly down the hospital corridor and stopped at Maya’s door. The doctors were finally allowing people to see her, but only close friends and family members. Her parents and brothers and sister came almost every day to check up on her.
“Hello Harry,” said a male’s voice behind me.
“Oh hello Mr. Hartman,” I said shaking his hand.
“Have you seen Maya?” he asked quietly. Not because he was trying to keep this quiet, but because I felt his voice couldn’t go any higher while he was talking about his daughter.
“I’m just checking now…” I said slowly opening the door to her room. The two of us walked over to her bed. There were flowers on her night table and a couple balloons with some pictures and cards. She hasn’t woken up yet.
I sat down at the chair next to her bed and took her hand gently in mine.
“Hello love,” I whispered, hoping she would hear me. She obviously didn’t because she didn’t move. Her father stood next to me and weakly smiled at his daughter. It was kinda hard though, seeing her in the condition she was in.
We were silent for a little while longer before her father leaned down and kissed her forehead, “I love you Maya.”
I smiled and he stepped back, “Sorry, but I have to get to work, it was nice seeing you Harry,” Mr. Hartman said and I shook his hand again. He nodded and walked out of the room, letting everything fall silent again.
The doctor’s had told me to talk to her as if she was awake. It was kinda weird though. She didn’t respond or move any part of her body to make it look like she had heard me. Louis seemed to be pretty good at it though. He was able to just walk in and start talking as if she was talking back to him. I would sit in the chair and just watch Maya’s chest move slightly up and down.
I rubbed the back of her hand, “I’ve talked to the doctors and they said that you’re going to be okay. Well, of course you’re going to be okay. Doesn’t that sound great?” I asked, but not getting a response. Her face stayed straight.
“And I’m pretty much fully healed right now, so I guess that’s good too. But we’re all so worried about you right now. I don’t know if you realized, but your father was just here. We walked in together. He had to leave though because he had to work. But I’m going to stay her with you, okay? How does that sound?” No response. All I wanted was a little movement in her hands, but there was nothing. She stayed still.
I held her hand in both of mine now, “But I’ve been thinking of some places where we could buy a house together, you know, just me and you? I haven’t really decided anything yet, but there are a lot of nice houses out there. We could get a really nice one. I can show you some that I found online when you wake up. I’m sure you’ll like them. But for now, I’ll just tell you about them. The first one I looked at had a huge wrap-around porch and the inside was something that I think you’d love. Everything seemed like something you would like. The kitchen was really nice too…”
