Elena's POV
"Elena, Brandon was a really great man, he was always ready to work hard and help, volunteer in any community work there is. One of the reasons I fell in love with him," Marissa chuckles sadly. "He was a part of the airforce too! He loved planes with a passion, he told me how as a kid he used to care how they worked, what made them fly and if someday he could fly one himself."
"Did he end up becoming a pilot?" I ask with a hint of excitement in my voice and her expression saddens.
"Yes, yes he did." She closes her eyes, taking a deep breath before once again opening them to reveal the tears that so elegantly trickled down her high cheekbones.
Diego notices this and brings the tissue box that had been positioned on the living room table. He offers a small smile to Marissa and she nods gratefully, "Sweetheart, one day he wanted to fly his best friends newest invention, a homebuilt plane. It passed all the technical checks," She pauses and wipes some more tears that had trickled.
I tense up and expect the worse, something in my heart tugs as I see her crying. There's always that mother-daughter inevitable bond. Diego picks me up and seats me on his lap, tightening his hold on me.
Marissa clears her throat, "Elena, Brandon died three years ago, in a plane crash."
My eyes go wide but I remain frozen, my mind fails to think. I don't feel as if though a part of me has left, he's someone I've never had. A part of my life I never got to experience. Is it wrong that I'm not upset?
I remain neutral and Diego's eyes reach mine, he furrows his eyebrows as if trying to decipher whether I'm upset or not. I shift my gaze to Marissa who is sobbing silently and so I go to give her a long hug. "It's alright." I whisper and Diego just stands there like an awkward third wheel.
Perhaps he realises that and so he states, "Uhm I'll be heading home, you both have some things to talk about. Princessa, ring me and I'll be here in less than a minute. Goodbye Mrs.Daniels."
With that he closes the front door and Marissa smiles such an affectionate smile, "He's a good one, keep him close." She giggles and so do I.
"Yeah, I'm really lucky aren't I?" Glancing through the window I see him standing in the exact same place he was when we had met. Add the moving trucks and his agitated father; it's the day he came to town, the day he entered my life.
Ever heard the saying "when you first entered my life I never imagined you'd be this important to me" Yeah well it applies, and it applies big time.
He has been flirty and cocky but to be honest I'd be lying right through my teeth if I said I didn't like that side of his a little bit. I think the best part is that he tried to be a great friend and he succeeded. As a matter of fact, he exceeded my expectations.
That's the thing about expectations, they give the power to transport you in a state of awe and surprise but they can also break you.
Diego never really broke me, in fact he treated me like a prized possession most times. He broke others for me hah! Example being Zack, synonym, trash bag with a net value in the negatives. Anyway back to my love, he's awesome, y'all should be jealous if you aren't already.
"Elena, honey?" Marissa shakes my shoulder gently. Her eyes are expectant and I'm torn apart from my thoughts. "You're thinking about him I see." She winks and I blush which practically gives her the answer.
"Maybe." I bite my lip in order not to smile but that ends up failing and I grin like an idiot.
