Chapter one: The Act
Ugh... I thought to my self.
"Annie why are you such a brat?!" My father called to me.
"You tell me" I responded sounding rather smart.
"Young lady, don't use that tone with me" my father chased me up the stairs.
I continued down the hall until I bolted to my room. BAM! I shut my door.
I leaned against my door ready to cry. "No! I told my self, don't cry!"
I couldn't hold it much longer, I just had to let out my emotions.
A single tear dropped from my face.
"Why are you so sad Annie?" A little voice asked.
"Oh hi Maggie, I didn't see you there".
"Are mom and dad bothering you about school again?" Maggie asked as if she already knew the answer.
"Yes, how did you know?" I asked her.
"I'm only 3 years younger than you, I know how high school is".
"That's true, you're almost smarter than me." I told Maggie giggling, clearly getting my mind off of school.
Maggie's face got serious as she looked outside. "What is it Maggie?"
"It's Mr. Carter, our Principle" she whispered. My mind suddenly went blank.
Why is he here? I wondered. We both watched out my window as he made his way up to our front door.
DING DONG, our doorbell yelled. "What do we do?" I asked Maggie as I started to panic.
"First of all, don't freak out, second, he's probably just dropping off a book or something that one of us left at school" she told me.
"You're right" I told her. Sure enough Mr.Carter dropped off what looked like a permission slip.
"That was close" I told Maggie. She nodded her head in agreement.
As soon as we saw Mr. Carter get in his car, we also heard footsteps coming up the stairs.
Then the footsteps got right outside my bedroom. Maggie and I both froze.
"Annie... We need to talk" my mother calmly said.
"What's there to talk about? I challenged her.
"Your father said that he tried to speak with you but you wouldn't let him".
My voice cracked. "He's not my father, he's my step-dad".
I could hear my mom letting out a deep sigh. I smiled to myself. Maggie put a hand on my shoulder looking concerned.
I thought about the way I was talking to my mom and then let out a sigh of my own.
"Fine, I'll talk" I said to my mother through the door. The door slid open and my mother stepped in.
She looked surprised when she saw Maggie. I looked up at her from the ground.
"Maggie, honey, will you excuse us for a moment please?" My mother asked so kindly I almost felt bad about the way I had treated her.
"Yes mother". Maggie took one last look at my pale face and then left the room.
"Honey..." My mom started. I couldn't take this any more, I had to find a way out of this.
"I'm sorry!" I almost screamed, I started to cry uncontrollably, not meaning it of course.
"There there" my mother hugged me. I hid my smile as best as I could.
For the final touch of this pathetic act... I ran downstairs and gave my step-dad a hug.
This had to work! My mom was a sucker for anything sweet, but my step-dad as I saw him, was plain strict.
But by hugging him maybe I could get off the hook about all this school and bad grades.
He let out a chuckle as he hugged me back. It worked! I screamed in my head.
My mother came down and put her hands over her heart like she was touched by this act.
Maggie followed mother as they both joined me and my step-dad in a group hug.
That night we ate as a happier family than usual. It felt weird because the whole "I'm sorry" thing was an act.
I was off the hook for now, but unfortunately, anything is possible.
