Chapter 6: Saved by an Arrow
As soon as I got to a thick looking forest I paced my self and started to walk.
There were strange noises I had never heard before and strange smells I had never smelt before.
After an hour or so of walking through the thick woods my stomach let out a loud growl.
I saw what looked like grapes on a vine but decided not to take my chances.
My forehead was starting to fill up with sweat.
I heard a twig snap behind me then I froze.
I slowly started to turn around but what looked like a wolf pinned me down hardly against the forest floor.
I looked into it's green eyes and images of Jace ran through my mind.
The wolf lifted it's paw ready to finish me off.
I suddenly felt the wolf fall on me, lifeless.
I struggled to get up but the wolf was dragged off of me.
I stood up too fast and was soon spinning in circles.
As soon as my fuzzy vision was gone I looked over and saw a guy.
He had brown hair like mine and brown eyes with a hint of green in them.
I looked down and saw he had bloody hands, and the dead wolf was lying in front of him.
There was an arrow going through the wolf.
"Hello there" he said to me with a straight face.
You can't trust another guy ever again! I reminded myself.
"Um...hi" I said almost hitting myself for letting this awkward silence creep into yet another one of my conversations.
"How did you do that?" I asked him looking back at the wolf.
"With this" he held up his bow.
"You saved my life" I smiled.
"Yeah... The name is Thomas." He said reaching out to shake my hand.
"I'm Annie" I said shaking his bloody hand.
"Are you lost?" Thomas asked me leaning against a near tree.
"No, why do you want to know?" I questioned, frowning.
"Just trying to be friendly, you don't have to have a cow," He said smiling.
"Well what are you doing here?" I asked him crossing my arms.
"I ran away from my foster home about a year ago and I've been living in the woods ever since." He said.
"Why are you here?" He asked taking a step closer.
"You ask a lot of questions" I told him taking a step back.
"So do you" he said laughing.
"That's true" I said trying to hide my smile.
"How old are you?" He asked me.
Should I answer that? I can't trust him! My mind went back and forth.
It slipped out of my mouth, "I'm 18."
His eyes lit up, "so am I!"
My cheeks got rosy and I started giggling.
"Follow me" he said reaching for my hand.
"Um... Why?" I asked avoiding his hand.
"Because if you stay here all alone you'll get killed by a wild animal," He frowned.
"Ok I'll follow you, but I don't hold hands." I said avoiding his eyes.
"Oh sorry" he said putting his hand down and started walking in the other direction.
I followed him... "We're almost there," he said looking back at me.
A few moments had passed when we reached a small shack.
I jumped as a loud bark echoed through the forest.
A huge grey dog charged out of the shack and knocked Thomas over, licking his face.
I couldn't help but let out a loud giggle.
He looked up at me and frowned, "you never told me how you got here."
"I...I... I ran away from home" tears streamed down my face.
"So I guess we have two things in common, our age and reason for being out here" he said trying to cheer me up.
"Yeah I guess" I smiled and the tears on my cheeks started to dry up.
He got up, "this is Hunter" he said patting the gray Great Dane on the head.
"I found him out here a while back and we've been buddies ever since," he said wiping some of the slobber off of his face.
Hunter came over to me and licked the palm of my hand.
"So this is where you live?" I asked him looking at the broken shed.
"Yep, it has a sunroof and everything" he said proudly.
"Want a tour?" He asked excitedly.
"I'm good" I sighed thinking back to Maggie's teary eyes as I left.
I sat down on a log and rested my head in my hands.
Thomas came and sat down next to me, "what's that scar on your forehead from?" His eyes were fixed on my forehead as he asked me.
"It's a long story" I answered turning to face away from him."
I looked up at the sky and saw it was getting dark.
"It's getting dark" I said standing up.
"Oh yeah, you can crash at my place for the night if you want to" he offered.
Sleeping in a little shed with a guy I barely know and a great big Great Dane that could hurt me when I'm sleeping? I thought to myself.
"If it's ok with you" I said trying to avoid the silence I was so used to.
"Sure, Hunter is a great guard dog, you won't have to worry" he smiled.
The darkness I had been dreading all day had finally come, at least I had some sort of a roof over my head.
I sat in one of the corners of the room, Thomas sat in the opposite corner, using Hunter as his pillow.
We had nothing but leaves for mattresses, I guess it was better than rocks.
"Night Annie" Thomas said as he closed his eyes.
"Goodnight" I whispered.
