Chapter 4: A knife for a necklace
I woke up and stretched as I looked at the clock.
2:00 am? That can't be right
I looked at my phone, 6:50? School starts in ten minutes! I screamed in my head.
I picked out a shirt and some shorts and dressed as quickly as possible.
I rushed downstairs and stuffed my books into my backpack.
I saw Maggie and Jace playing a board game at the table.
"Maggie... What are you doing?" I asked.
"Playing a boardgame, Jace your turn." She responded.
"School starts in like 5 minutes!" I shouted.
Maggie giggled, "it's Saturday" she smiled.
I checked my phone, Maggie was right.
I threw my backpack at the wall and sat down at the table.
"Sorry Maggie" I said quietly.
"Don't sweat it" she said rolling the dice.
"Good morning Annie" Jace greeted me.
"Hi there" I said feeling dumb for thinking it was a school day.
I realized Jace was staring right at my arm.
"Is that from me?" He asked sounding surprised.
I looked down at my arm and saw a big bruise.
"I guess so" I responded.
"I'm still sorry about that" he apologized again.
Maggie looked up at us and smiled.
I could feel my face redden up once again.
Jace's did the same.
I shot Maggie an angry look.
"So do you know the house well enough to get around?" I asked him.
"Oh...uh... Not really" he said his face getting a little more red.
"I could show you around the neighborhood if you'd like." I offered.
"Sure, right now sounds great." He smiled.
"Maggie you want to tag along?" I asked her praying she would say yes.
"No thanks, I'm fine here" I thought I saw a smile on her face.
"This way" I led Jace to my silver bullet.
"Wow, nice ride" He chuckled.
"Thanks" I smiled starting the car.
As we rode by Collie's house I remembered the thank you letter I made for her.
"Hey Jace... Do you mind if we make a quick stop?" I asked.
"I don't mind, is it a friend?" He asked.
"Yes, I call her Collie for short" I smiled.
Why am I trusting this stranger with all of this information? I wondered.
We pulled in Collie's driveway and I got out.
"You can wait here" I said to Jace as I grabbed the card I made.
I walked up to Collie's door and saw it was open.
I suddenly got a bad feeling, but I opened the door anyways.
"Ah!!!" I screamed.
I looked in the doorway and saw Collie on the ground, blood surrounding her.
Jace ran over to me and asked, "what's wrong?"
I pointed at Collie as tears ran down my face.
Jace hesitated but after a few moments he was hugging me as I cried.
As soon as I pulled myself together I got my phone and called the police.
"There on their way" I told Jace.
"I'm sorry you had to see that" he told me.
I looked into his blueish green eyes and smiled a bit.
The police got there and as I watched them carry Collie away, I saw a knife where her diamond necklace should have been.
"What could have happened?" I asked him.
He looked down at the ground and said, "Annie I didn't know your friend but I think..." He stopped.
"What is it Jace?" I asked shaking.
"I think she tried to kill herself" he said trying not to look me straight I'm the eye.
"I...I have... No idea what this is about... Wait..." I continued to say.
"It was probably her parents" I said out loud, my anxiety coming back to get me.
"What are her parents like?" He asked me.
"They fight all the time, I don't know how she was so strong for so long." I said sadly.
Jace hugged me again but this time harder.
"Annie... why are you shaking?" He asked me.
"Annie?" He asked worried.
"Oh..." I said coming back to reality.
"Jace... I'm scared." I started shaking even more.
"Don't worry, I'm here with you" he said.
What is that suppose to mean? I asked myself.
I think I'm starting to fall for you, I said in my head.
"What?" Jace let go of me.
"What do you mean what?" I asked trying to sound like I wasn't thinking anything.
Can he read my mind? I wondered.
"You're starting to fall for me?" He asked.
"You can read mind!" I screamed shaking like crazy.
"No, you just said it out loud" he answered.
"Oh, is that really weird? I asked him guessing he won't ever want to talk to me again.
"Na, it's cool, your cool."He said blushing.
"Thanks" I said watching his cheeks get rosy.
Then I remembered the image of Collie with a knife through her heart.
I started to cry and Jace let me cry in his shoulder while he hugged me.
I sat up, my eyes are so dry, I thought.
I saw that I had made the right arm of his hoodie soaked.
"Sorry about your hoodie" I frowned.
"Sorry about the bruise" he also frowned.
"All is forgiven" I said giggling.
"I'm going home to take a nap" he said.
"Me too" I said struggling to keep my eyes open.
Jace grabbed my hand and helped me to the car.
He saw that I was half asleep so he lifted me in to the car.
I smiled a very weak smile.
I saw that he was going to drive so I put my feet on the dashboard.
"I think I'm falling for you too Annie" Jace said as my eye lids slid closed.
